The Netflix U.S. social media team must be feeling a bit embarrassed right now. The official Twitter account for Netflix was hacked this yesterday morning. That doesn’t happen everyday. At least now they know they are vulnerable and hopefully can take steps to remedy that.
It was hacked by the self-proclaimed white hat group OurMine, which is known for hacking social media accounts of high profile people/companies. It doesn’t post any content that might embarrass the targets, but simply points out that they have weak security and that they should get in touch with OurMine to help improve it.
When OurMine hacks a social media account, it sends out a message saying that it’s just “testing your security,” and also advertises its security services with an email address and a link to its website. You’ve probably seen it before. The group has hacked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams of Twitter and many more.
A member of OurMine Team said that they first hacked Netflix’s Director of Social Media and used that account to get into more Netflix accounts. They didn’t share details of how they were able to hack the company’s Director of Social Media, but did say that the team was not planning to do anything with Netflix’s Twitter account. At least Netflix can shore up their defenses now. Can’t say they weren’t warned.
