Fortnite is very popular right now, but Minecraft has been popular forever. Microsoft’s Helen Chiang says that Minecraft now has 112 million active players every month, which is a surge of 20 million over figures from October 2018. The number includes players across all platforms, including those who play the game as part of an Xbox Game Pass. Pretty impressive for a game that has been around for about a decade.
Chiang described it partly as due to the game’s evergreen status. It’s a title that people “keep coming back to.” Minecraft’s blocky graphics and simple mechanics make it easy to play on modestly-equipped devices too, whether it’s a budget PC or a smartphone. And you can spend a modest amount on hardware and still get a quality experience. Those are just a few of the reasons.
Microsoft just has to keep the game relevant. Roblox recently topped 100 million monthly players, and Fortnite may not be very far off (it reported 78.3 million users in August 2018). It might not take much for other games to outdo Minecraft if they don’t innovate.
One thing is for sure, players keep coming back and they will continue to do so as long as they are having fun.
