You may remember that back in July of this year there was word about how Microsoft intends to slim down their workforce by 18,000 jobs before the end of next year. That is always sad news in this economy and we never like to see people losing their jobs.
Then last month, Microsoft moved to release 2,100 of their employees, and now we have word that another round of layoffs has occurred. This one will impact about 3,000 employees. This is not good news.
It looks like most of the layoffs targeted support staff. Hopefully those who were let go have enough savings to hold them over until they get a new job. However, after all of the intended 18,000 job cuts are completed, it should to cost the company somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion. We love our gadgets, but this is the side of technology that we don’t like. When the humans who helped bring us our toys get affected negatively and suffer. Sadly companies the size of Microsoft need to do it in order to help streamline its operations while reducing the overall overhead costs. Hopefully most of these people will have only limited downtime before they find more work.
