As far as Spider-Man villains, Venom is one of the most popular and recognizable ones. Venom made his debut in a Spider-Man movie years ago, although Topher Grace’s portrayal of the character was not so great. We got a second chance with Tom Hardy that was much better received.
The Venom movie seemed to exist largely outside of the MCU, but now it looks like Marvel may be thinking about a crossover. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ head was quoted as saying, “I think probably it’s up to Sony. Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point.”
This does not mean that this movie is a done deal, but just that Marvel is open to the idea if Sony is willing to play along. Marvel had previously sold Sony the movie rights to Spider-Man and some of the characters from the Spider-Man franchise.
It was only a few years ago that Marvel and Sony reached a deal that would see Sony “lend” Spider-Man to Marvel, resulting in Spider-Man: Homecoming and also allowing the character to appear in other MCU movies.
