Imagine that you can build your very own aircraft and soar the wild blue yonder. Well, now you can build your own experimental plane and fly it, thanks to MakerPlane. The open source aviation organization will let you download plans and schematics for free, then build your plane’s parts using CNC mills and 3D printers. Pretty awesome stuff.
If you don’t have a 3d printer of your own, you can go to a “makerspace” that has all of the necessary tools and equipment. Open source avionics software is also included, allowing you to even create digital flight instruments and displays.
The group is working on its first set of plans right now and they hope to be finished in time to fly it at the Oshkosh airshow in 2014. This is awesome stuff. Creating your own plane? I’m there.
