It looks like some lucky school kids in Los Angeles are getting 640,000 iPads for free. The first batch of 31,000 will be given this year and the remaining 609,000 iPads is coming next year.
Apple wants to bring the digital age into classrooms, but strangely the prices quoted for the first 31 000 come to $31 million. That makes each of the iPads a thousand dollars. To purchase the rest, the Los Angeles School Board of Education will need to secure additional funds. That’s a lot of money.
All of the tablets will come pre-loaded with textbooks and other educational applications and 47 campuses in Los Angeles will be covered in all. I hope they don’t get too distracted by Angry Birds.
