Netflix has made it much easier to manage downloads on mobile. You don’t even need to worry about purging watched episodes anymore. Netflix has launched “smart downloads” for Android, which automatically deletes downloaded episodes that you’ve already seen. It goes one step further though, instantly replacing an old episode by downloading the next one.
This feature is very handy because it can help ensure that you don’t fill your storage and run out of space. Not everyone has an SD card for expansion after all.
Netflix sees the launching smart downloads as part of its efforts to make the mobile experience easier for users, and it designed the feature with your data cap in mind. The feature only does it’s thing if you’re connected to the internet via WiFi, so you don’t have to go out of your way to make sure that it won’t download anything while you’re on mobile data.
If you want to keep shows stored in your phone to watch again and again, though, you can turn off smart downloads in the settings at any time. The feature is live right now for Android phones and tablets. We don’t know if it’s also making its way to iPhones and iPads.
