As long as Netflix has been around, there have been rumors and speculation that it would drop its DVD shipping business in favor of streaming only. Over the years there have been several things that have pointed toward an end to that aspect of the service. Like the recent unusually long wait times subscribers are seeing for many DVDs right now.
The Consumerist reported on Netflix subscribers who are facing “very long wait” times for a variety of DVDs. Some are classics and others are pretty obscure low-demand films. Still others are things like Noah, The Sandlot, Letters from Iwo Jima, and certain discs of TV show seasons. So, it runs across the board.
These customers report never receiving any kind of solid answer when they contact Netflix about the issue. Some are threatening to drop the service if shipping speeds don’t increase. We don’t really know what is going on since Netflix refuses to comment. So of course speculation has started that this could be a step by Netflix toward phasing out its DVD shipping business. Of course, they may just be trying to keep costs down, but miscalculated demand. We will have to wait and see if the situation improves.
