Netflix is always ahead of the game. Netflix was one of the major internet streaming services to offer content in 4K for subscribers who have 4K TVs and an internet connection that can handle Ultra HD content. The company’s original shows are now shot in 4K. And now it looks like Netflix has taken the next step with the third season of its popular and award winning show House of Cards, which was filmed in 6K.
The company reportedly shot and finished season three of House of Cards in 6K despite the fact that it is only streaming the show in up to 4K resolution. 4K adoption hasn’t picked up yet after all, but I guess Netflix wants to be ahead of the curve.
Apparently they even shot visual effects in 6K, which is rare, since it is tough to do and costs a lot more. In fact, films that are finished in 4K usually have visual effects work done in 2K to cut down on costs. Netflix is said to have received master copies of House of Cards season 3 in 4K and has told the production house to store 6K masters in an archive. One episode in 6K is said to be a whopping 5.5TB of data.
