Research firm Canalys released a study of the App Store and Google Play that confirms the findings of a previous study. It shows that during the first twenty days of November, 25 developers got half of all app revenue. We are talking about $60 million distributed among them.
Interestingly, out of those 25 developers, 24 are game studios. Yes, it’s tough for the little guy. The only non-gaming company that made it into the top 25 was Pandora. And out of the top 300 paid applications in the App Store, 145 are games, and in the Play Store it’s 116 out of the 300 top paid applications. 94 out of the 300 top free apps are games in the App Store, while 110 out of the top 300 free for Android are games.
The firm points out that discoverability for startup devs is getting harder since the search functions are optimized for the top grossing or popular apps.
