You may not have noticed, but Google has been slowly working its way into the education space. The company has been making a push into schools with Chromebooks, and announced Google Play for Education at I/O this year, aiming to bring educational apps to schools. And now, it will be bringing textbooks to Google Play.
Textbooks will first show up in Google Play in August, just in time for the new school year. Textbooks will be available from all five major publishers: Pearson, Wiley, Macmillan Higher Education, McGraw-Hill, and Cengage Learning. We don’t know yet what books will be made available.
We also don’t have any word on pricing, but Google has promised that textbooks will feature a discount of “up to 80%” compared to the traditional textbook pricing, which is ridiculous. Google will also be offering a rental option which will let you use the book for 6 months at a reduced price. That’s great news for students.
