You have your choice of VR headsets available in the market right now, everyone from Samsung to Chinese vendors are offering them up. Most cost under $99 unless you’re going for premium versions like the Oculus Rift. It was over a year ago that Google came out with a more affordable cardboard alternative.
Now the company has announced that it has shipped more than 5 million Cardboard viewers. Awesome news for Google!
Cardboard is a simple viewer that allows anyone to experience virtual reality using their mobile device. It has even set up educational programs for kids where they can take virtual field trips. It is a huge hit. Google also revealed that more than 25 million Cardboard-enabled apps have been installed from the Google Play Store, with 10 million of those coming in just the past two months. More than 350,000 hours of YouTube video has been watched in virtual reality so far too. So VR is as popular as ever. Those numbers are only going to climb higher.
Over 750,000 virtual reality photos have been taken with Cardboard Camera and students have attended more than 500,000 virtual expeditions using this simple VR viewer. Not bad at all for a cardboard device. Google will offer more apps and projects. They aren’t done yet.
