GameFly, the video game rental service, is going head to head with Netflix, unveiling its new movie rental service. GameFly subscribers were introduced to the service today, and can now get Blu-ray and DVD movie disc rentals in the same way customers rented from Netflix in the earlier days of that service.
If you already have a GameFly account, you won’t need to sign up for a different account to get movies, and you can get up to two movie discs at a time. Right now, the feature is in beta. This is a natural extension of what GameFly already does with video game disc rentals. Now, users of the service can rent both types of content from the save service. So convenience is a big value factor.
By adding disc rentals to its disc-based game service, GameFly could be a solid contender in the market. Netflix’s video streaming is it’s bread and butter, so disc based movies are a good offering from GameFly as they can get a nice chunk of Netflix’s business there. A GameFly subscription for 2 games out at a time is $22.95 per month. Movies won’t start shipping until April 4, but subscribers can add them to their queue right now.
