HBO’s Game of Thrones has set a lot of records over its run. As the series got more and more popular year after year, it would regularly break viewing records for season premieres and finales. And now with Sunday’s last episode of the series, one would expect that it would break all previous records, and guess what? It did.
The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the final episode of the final season didn’t just break the record for the show, it set a new record for the most watched episode of any HBO show ever with 13.6 million views on the live HBO channel.
This is an impressive achievement, even if most fans have angry with the way the final season has been wrapped up this year. Some have even launched a petition calling for HBO to remake the entire season, not that it would ever happen.
But they still tuned in to watch, with the total number of viewers going up to 19.3 million when you add in streaming and on-demand rewatches. That’s a new record for Game of Thrones and HBO. So despite a terrible last season and a terrible finale, HBO’s most popular show ended with high numbers.
