We may not have robots in our homes to do our laundry and cook our food, but we humans can still encounter robots from time to time. Like G.I.A. (Gestural Interactive Automaton). This robotic sculpture was created by Daniel Jay Bertner. It hangs on the wall and it is basically a projector.
It is a projection sphere and a webcam attached to three servo-controlled articulating arms. A human face is projected onto the sphere and that face follows you around and changes its expression according to your reactions.
The idea is to “emulate and socially engage” viewers and bridge the gap between man and machine. It uses open source motion tracking and facial recognition software. It’s a thin line between cool and creepy. Not sure which side this one is on.
