The Apple Watch requires an iPhone for it to work, but Google’s Wear OS smartwatches actually play nice with the iPhone, to a point. One of the features that it seems to be lacking is the ability to make calls on the iPhone through the smartwatch, even if the iPhone is connected and paired with it. This is frustrating.
However, for Wear OS users who use an iPhone, you might be happy to learn that in the latest update to Fossil’s Gen 5 smartwatches, it will now allow Wear OS users to make iPhone calls through their smartwatch. That is great news, but we should note that this update only applies to the Gen 5 smartwatches, so if you own an older Fossil smartwatch, then you might be out of luck. Sorry.
We don’t know if there are plans to update older Fossil watches, or if there could be hardware limitations. So for now, it is only available for the Gen 5 smartwatch. It’s still pretty good news for Fossil owners. You can take and make calls, and the update is also said to improve calls on Android devices and fixes an annoying “ticking” issue.
The update is being rolled out right now, so if you don’t see it yet, it will come soon.
