We recently learned that Sony went through more than 20 different prototypes for its PS4 DualShock 4 controller for the upcoming PlayStation 4 console. They wanted to get it just right. Well, now we have some more interesting news about the latest dualshock controller.
In a recent interview with Sony’s Toshimasa Aoiki, VentureBeat revealed that the DualShock 4 controllers also did away with analog buttons, due to lack of interest from developers. The DualShock 4 controllers will have digital buttons and will only register on and off states, versus analog buttons which allow for several states.
For instance, in Gran Turismo 5, the game lets gamers slowly accelerate by pressing the shoulder buttons on the DualShock 3 controllers slowly, but if you were to attempt something similar with the DualShock 4 controllers, it would not work. Aoki says, “With the DualShock 3, we were able to get analog data, which games didn’t really use […] For DualShock 4, we deleted that, and now it’s all digital. The mechanism inside is a little different, and the data that games get is different.” This won’t affect your enjoyment of games, but it is interesting to get a behind the scenes look at the way Sony works when changing things up.
