We knew Disney+ would be the new home of Star Wars ever since it was announced, but Disney kept an interesting nugget secret until launch. The entire Star Wars series, including the original trilogy and prequels, has also been remastered in 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos support, delivering the clearest look at these movies yet.
A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi all look beautiful on Disney+. The image looks sharp and detailed. The original trilogy certainly won’t be a showcase for Dolby Vision HDR like The Last Jedi, but the technology gives the image more depth. You have never seen Star wars looking this good.
The first two trilogies hit Blu-ray back in 2011, so it’s been a while since they’ve been retouched. And if those rumors about a 4K boxset are true, that likely won’t arrive until 2020. For now, Disney+ is your only source for 4K Star Wars. Which was obviously intentional. If you want it you have to subscribe to Disney Plus. Sadly these aren’t the versions of Star Wars that fans want to see since they aren’t the despecialised versions of the altered movies. Maybe one day we will get those.
