The most popular chat platform for gamers is Discord and the platform will now be selling early access games, adding to the growing catalog of titles on the Discord Store. Early access became popular with Steam. It allows gamers to buy games that are still in development and gives players access to games months, sometimes even years, before launch, so they can give feedback to developers.
Many games have become popular through this model, like Ark: Survival Evolved and Fortnite. The early access games at launch include Mad Machines, a Rocket League-type soccer game featuring robots that will be exclusive to Discord, Parkasaurus, a Sims/Jurassic Park type game, sandbox RPG Kynseed, first-person horror game Visage, and the downhill biking game Descenders.
Back in August Discord launched its store to compete with Steam. The Discord Store differentiates itself from Valve’s store by “curating” games to gamers. There’s also a subscription service called Discord Nitro for $9.99 a month, where users can get access to a library of games.
Sales should grow quite a bit since Discord nearly tripled its user base in just a year. I wonder what Steam thinks about this and if they will be offering anything different to counter.
