Blizzard’s World of Warcraft MMORPG, over the past couple of years has had a steady decline in subscribers. However, in a surprising bit of news from Activision’s latest financial report, it looks like Blizzard actually saw an increase in subscribers for the first time in a few years.
The number of active World of Warcraft gamers is set at 7.8 million which is up by 200,000 from back in September 2013. At the time it was reported to be at 7.6 million. Those numbers aren’t as good as the old days, but it’s a step in the right direction.
We don’t know why Blizzard is enjoying an increase in subscribers. The upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion helps, for sure. Blizzard has also announced that they managed to sell an additional 1 million copies of Diablo 3 this quarter, totaling 15 million copies sold to date. Maybe some Diablo players have discovered WoW and signed up. So things are looking up for Warcraft and Diablo 3 continues to sell. This is great news for Blizzard. The game should sell even more on the latest generation of consoles, the PS4 and the Xbox One.
