Marvel’s superhero movies always do very well and post strong worldwide earnings on their opening weekend. Captain Marvel is no exception. It has raked in a worldwide box office total of $455 million over the weekend. This is the second largest global opening of any superhero movie, second only to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. Let’s see how those numbers break down.
Disney says that Captain Marvel has earned an estimated $153 million in the United States and $455 million globally in its first weekend in theaters. The film has opened in most countries except Japan. The earnings are what Disney expected, which was between $145-$155 million in the U.S.
Captain Marvel is also the first Marvel superhero movie that’s headlined exclusively by a female superhero. Not only is it the second largest opening for a superhero movie, but it also has the sixth best worldwide opening of all time. That’s in addition to the biggest opening for the month of March.
These worldwide numbers are impressive since the movie has opened to mixed reviews from critics. Some have praised it while others feel that it’s pretty terrible. The real question is whether it has staying power at the box office. We will see soon.
