Irrational Games is the company behind the BioShock franchise, and they have made some pretty decent and very popular steampunk games. Now it looks like Irrational Games will be shutting down according to an update from the studio’s co-founder, Ken Levine.
About 15 members of the staff will be laid off. This is sad news for Bioshock fans. We don’t know why exactly Levine will be shutting down the studio, but maybe the Bioshock series got too big to handle. Levine says, “I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.” Well, that certainly sounds good, but it is still sad news.
The BioShock franchise will be handed over to 2K, one of Take-Two’s subsidiaries. At least we know it is in good hands. Levine said that he will be “starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two,” for what that is worth. Hopefully that leads to more great games like Bioshock.
