Microsoft’s co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates has decided to build a smart city in Arizona. He’s spending $80 million to do it. You know, it’s just what you do when you have millions to spare and a bunch of time on your hands.
This planned smart city is going to be based outside Phoenix, Arizona. The money will be poured in through a group controlled by Gates’ investment firm Cascade Investment. The smart city is going to be on nearly 25,000 acres of land when all is said and done. Yes, that is pretty massive indeed.
This smart city is going to be comparable in square miles and projected population to Tempe. There will be 3,400 acres of open space and 470 acres will be dedicated to public schools. 3,800 acres will be reserved for industrial, office, and retail space. Also, over 80,000 homes will be built in this smart city. It is a massive undertaking that won’t happen overnight.
The city will have data centers, high-speed networks, self-driving cars, an automatic logistics hub, and new manufacturing technologies. This is designed to be a city of the future, where new technology can blossom and thrive. So who is ready to move in and live there?
