Delivering goods cross-country by trucks is challenging. Especially because humans are involved. Humans need to make stops and rest. But they are also pressured to meet certain deadlines. This can make drivers careless, which could result in accidents.
So autonomous vehicles might be the solution. Without a human driver, it could travel all day and all night, only stopping to refuel. In fact, Plus.ai has announced that they have successfully tested this out with a truck that delivered butter from Tulare, California to Quakertown, Pennsylvania. In just 3 days. That’s amazing.
This a 2,800 mile journey that delivered 40,000 pounds of butter. The truck drove itself but had a safety driver on board ready to take over just in case something went wrong, along with a safety engineer who observed the entire journey.
According to the company’s co-founder and COO Shawn Kerrigan, the truck had zero disengagements, which means that at no point in time did the self-driving system need to be taken over by the human driver. While it could still be a few years before we start seeing self-driving trucks populate our roads, this test does show that it is possible.
You can depend on these trucks for delivering your butter it seems.
