Looking for a break from today’s devices, constant texting and everything else? Applebee’s wants to be your special sanctuary. A safe haven from technology. It looks like the casual dining chain will become a place of refuge once a week, if you want to take a break from our connected world.
The company has filed a trademark application for “No Tech Tuesday.” What is odd is that this report seems to contradict the restaurant’s previous plan to place tablets in all of their restaurants. The idea was that the tablets would be used to help customers pay at the table, order more food etc. This seems to go against that.
Now it looks like the tablets will get turned off each Tuesday in order to give you a break from tech. It seems to be a trend. In Israel, one restaurant gives customers who turn off their phones, a 50% discount on their checks. That would get me to turn mine off. Another place in New Jersey had some “No Tech Tuesday” nights in February. Anyone caught using their phone or tablet at the table was fined, with the money going to charity. Again, not a bad idea.
Still not convinced. How about a new game called “phone stacking”? Everyone seated at a table puts their phones or tablets in the middle of the table. The first one to reach for them is stuck with the check. Maybe some people have had enough of their devices and just feel like they need a break.
