Fans of Apple’s iWork will be sad to know that the web service will be shut down in July. This comes after Microsoft announced that its Windows Mobile Marketplace will be taken offline in May. Web services seem to be dropping like flies. The exact date that they will shut down the iWork.com beta service is July 31st, 2012. The choice was simple since Apple now iCloud which can do pretty much the same things.
The service was launched in early 2009 in concert with iWork ’09, so it hasn’t been around all that long. If you want to use the service for anything you had better do it while you can, because after July 31st, you won’t be able to access your documents on the iWork.com website or view them on the web. Make sure that you download anything you want to keep before that date. Otherwise it will be gone forever.
Too bad Apple isn’t offering a service to help you migrate your documents from iWork to iCloud. That would have been quite courteous. I guess the honeymoon is over.
