Due to recent events people have gone crazy in an attempt to ban anything with a confederate flag on it. It is the typical overreaction as everyone tries to cover their butts. Apple began pulling games from the App Store that included depictions of confederate flags too. Again, an overreaction to the current movement by businesses and state governments to get rid of the flag.
Apps were removed that included the flag for educational or historical reasons, such as historical games. Thankfully there are still some sane people in the world and Apple has reversed some of its bans.
Developers of educational apps and historical games started getting messages from Apple stating that their app had been removed for displaying the confederate flag in an offensive/mean spirited way. This was just plain untrue for many of these apps. Apple’s official statement was thus:
We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.
That last sentence says it all. Apple has clarified their position even further, telling TechCrunch that it is working to get those that fall under the educational and historical categories back into the App Store, as they weren’t meant to be removed in the first place.
It’s always a bad idea when corporations and government start regulating things that are in bad taste. Just because a confederate flag is there, doesn’t mean that it is being used to promote hate. But at least Apple calmed down enough to show some maturity.
