Apple announced a while back that it would be investing in a sapphire glass production plant in the US, the company is expected to use sapphire glass for future iPhone and iPad displays.
The last thing we heard was that the iPhone 6 could come with a sapphire glass display that will also feature solar charging, and now Apple has been awarded a new patent for sapphire glass production.
The patent that Apple has been awarded related to the processing and cutting of sapphire wafers for use in consumer electronics.
Sapphire glass is a very tough material, Apple currently uses Gorilla Glass in their smartphones and tablets, although using the tougher sapphire glass could make their devices less prone to scratches and also damaged displays.
