In their ongoing effort to own everything, a new report suggests that Amazon is serious about getting into the sportswear market now. The company is apparently preparing to launch its own sportswear line which will take on brands like Nike and Lulelemon.
Amazon has enlisted Taiwan-based Makalot Industrial Co. to make apparel for its sportswear line. This company produces clothing for Uniqlo, Kohl’s, and Gapas well. Right now this project is new and so long-term contracts haven’t been signed yet. The manufacturers are only producing small amounts for Amazon on a trial basis to start.
This is not Amazon’s first venture into the world of private-label fashion. It previously offered office clothing, dresses, and jackets under brand names like Paris Sunday and Goodthreads. It will be interesting to see how this works for them. Eclat Textile Co., another Taiwan-based textile company, is also said to be involved in the project. Eclat makes clothing for sportswear giants Nike, Under Armour, and Lululemon, so it has a lot of experience with manufacturing sportswear. Can Amazon compete with these brands? I guess we will find out. Amazon hasn’t commented on the report yet, but maybe they will do so sometime soon.
