As we enter the new year, market analysts are making predictions about acquisitions that we might see happen in 2018. One analyst is predicting that Amazon is going to buy Target this year. It makes sense. If anyone is going to shakeup the retail landscape, it will be Amazon, who is always making moves.
This prediction comes from Loup Venture co-founder Gene Munster, in a report that states that Amazon is going to acquire Target in 2018. He says that Target is the ideal offline partner for Amazon as it has a shared demographic and a “manageable but comprehensive store count.”
The company did buy Whole Foods for $13.7 last year. Amazon has not publicly hinted at a possible acquisition of Target, so take it with a grain of salt for now. We don’t even know if both companies have even talked about this.
Munster is valuing a potential deal at $41 billion which would be a 15 percent premium over Target’s current value. This deal would likely have to be approved by regulators. I guess we will have to wait and see if this comes to pass. It’s just a prediction right now and there’s no confirmation. It would be an interesting move by Amazon.
