When you think about it, the Kindle is a pretty amazing device. You can’t really improve it very much. Through the use of an E Ink display, battery life lasts for months, not hours. It’s a great reading device. Amazon probably shouldn’t tinker with it. Or should they?
We have news that Amazon is experimenting with adding a light source to the Kindle and Devin Coldewey of TechCrunch has seen a prototype of a new Kindle using a front-lit lighting method. The E Ink display is said to be lit very evenly and softly. He describes it as a “blue-white glow” which seems odd, but it could work for just viewing text.
Amazon didn’t develop this lighting unit, but instead bought itself a company named Oy Modilis that specializes in this area. I’m not sure why they want to add a light at all though. The Kindle doesn’t need it for what it does. I guess we will just have to see what happens here. Hopefully the device doesn’t get thicker.
