Amazon Echo aka Alexa has been limited in the things you can do until recently. Now it’s getting a bit more talented, by hooking up with Wink. Now you can say “Alexa, dim the bedroom lights” with a wink.
You’ll still need the Wink mobile app to set everything up. You can hook up any Wink-compatible smart bulb from GE, Leviton, and Lutron and then hook up your Wink account with Echo. You’ll have to ask Alexa to discover new devices and wait for a few seconds. Once the setup is done, controlling your lights is just a matter of speaking a command. Pretty easy.
Amazon Echo isn’t the most popular voice-enabled smart assistant and its lack of functionality doesn’t help, but Amazon is changing that slowly. You might remember that at first, it directly added support for features and services, like shopping by voice or Google calendar but recently, it has been harnessing the talent of other developers. Late last month, Amazon released its official SDK to allow developers to integrate with Echo.
Also, until recently Amazon Echo was only available for Prime members, so it hasn’t reached everyone that it could. I guess we will see how well this can compete with an assistant that’s already in your pocket or in your hands. It’s a tough sell.
