Most have us have tried the Age of Empires RTS game at least once. The game was one of the more popular RTS games when it was first introduced. Not so much anymore. Then in 2011, Microsoft introduced Age of Empires Online which was basically an MMO version of the game.
The game kept its RTS-type gameplay, but introduced MMO elements as well, like having your empire remain as it is even after you go offline. It also had trading that allowed players to craft materials and trade them with other players. Sadly popularity waned and now it looks like Age of Empires Online has come to an end. It was fun while it lasted.
Microsoft has shut down the game’s servers. So if you were a fan, this will be sad news for you. An entry on the official Age of Empires blog says, “The most thanks, though, belong to you, the players of the game. It has been a pleasure and an honor serving you all. Thank you for the time you have spent with us, exploring all these little worlds together and conquering them for the glory of your Alliance and your Empire. Thank you especially for the times you spent with each other, in PVP matches, in co-op quests, and in the forums and the rest of the internet. Thank you for playing.”
The age has come to an end for this empire. It happens. At least you had some fun times and you have the memories.
