Action figures are a huge business. Activision has combined action figures with a video game and the result is Skylanders. Skylanders uses figurines to interact through the use of NFC. It is an idea that appears to be paying off big time.
According to a new press release from Activision, the company is claiming that the Skylander toys have actually managed to outsell all other action figures in the US in 2013. That’s a bold statement. These numbers are based on internal Activision numbers along with the US NPD Group’s numbers.
The Skylanders franchise has produced $1.5 billion in revenue around the world, and while it might not be the best-selling video game title, Activision claims that the latest Skylanders Giants title is the best-selling console and handheld title in overall dollars spent in 2013. Pretty sweet! I bet we see more games like this now.
