It looks like Activision is making a new Guitar Hero game for release this year, according to Kotaku UK. If you are a fan of the series, this is good news. This will be the first Guitar Hero game in four years. Activision had previously called off development of the series in February of 2011. That was due to poor sales.
Apparently the art will be “more realistic” than the franchise’s usual cartoonish style and the game will include new guitar peripherals as well. The game is in development for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and the sources say that we can expect an announcement at E3 in June.
It looks like music games are making a comeback this year. Harmonix recently released new content for Rock Band, after nearly two years. Harmonix also sent out a survey asking fans which consoles they owned, which aspects of Rock Band they liked the most, and whether they still owned their old plastic guitars and drum kits. Seems like they are doing serious research. I guess they feel that people still want these titles.
Activision had this to say:
“We don’t comment on rumor or speculation, but have previously said, that as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises, we would only bring Guitar Hero back if we developed the right innovations to usher the franchise into the new generation of gaming.”
Looks like that time has come.
