The Wii U has been on the market for 9 months, and as you might have heard, it isn’t doing so well. In that time, it has only sold 3.61 million units, with a mere 166,000 new consoles being purchased last quarter. To put that in perspective, Nintendo managed to sell 9.27 million units over the same time period for the Wii. Yeah, not good at all.
Nintendo is going to face competition from much more powerful consoles as the PS4 and XBox One launch. They will make the Wii U the cheapest next-gen console, but don’t expect a price drop. This is because the Wii U continues to be sold at a loss. Any price drop would just see that loss increase.
This puts the big N in a bad place. They aren’t selling anywhere enough machines to generate profits and they can’t stimulate the market by cutting the price of the hardware. Their fate rests with first party games. Hopefully they can sell the heck out of some. It is their only hope.
