The Worlds Thinnest OLED Display from Sony – Just 0.3mm Thick

Sony has shown off a new thin OLED which is ten times thinner than its previous XEL-1 OLED display.

This new display measures a tiny 0.3mm thick, and it delivers a resolution of 960×540.

There really aren’t many technical specifications about this new display, but Sony are looking to get this thin display into production within the next 2-3 years.

If you look at the pictures, the display is almost paper thin, never mind hanging it on the wall it could be stuck on like wallpaper.

Can it be powered by the level of current available from solar generation? Soon we may no longer need transmission lines, only solar cells and back up batteries! Con-Ed will have to ‘con’ someone else!

They probably need to wait 2-3 so they can find some new stronger material to make it out of so when you buy it, it doesn’t break before you get it home.

Notice how they have it in a large glass display case so no one can touch it, I would say it is probably pretty fragile.

The reason its in glass is because alone it is extremely fragile. But in actual use they would be place inside a case (so they wouldn’t snap or break from use). It could be used in current laptops by replacing the current screens. Another application is Cell phones. The smaller the screen the more stuff can be placed inside (imagine a much smaller iphone)

@fatgadget- Also, its probably a $10000 dollar prototype. I wouldnt want anyone smudging it or trying to see how flexible it is.

It certainly is very impressive, the amount of products they could apply it to are amazing

Why wait? I mean, the technology is obviously here. Of course, they have to optimize a bit and maybe make it a little stronger, but I think the main reason for waiting to bring it on the market is that they still have some other technologies that still have to make the journey from public release to engineered obsolescence.

Just because you have the technology available doesn’t mean its economically feasible to bring to market.

Perhaps the author could give a little consideration to the difference between saying “ten times thinner” and ‘one tenth as thick’. Ten times thinner is a negative number (take the original thickness, multiply it by ten, then subtract it from the original number). One tenth as thick is the original thickness divided by ten.
