The Eko Stoplight
As I have said before the simplest designs are always the cleverest, this is definitely the case with the Eko Stoplight from designer Damjan Stankovic.
The Eko Stoplight is a great design for a traffic light, and as you can see from the photos the traffic light features a built in timer, which is displayed around the light.

The timer counts down, and shows on the traffic light how much time there is left before it changes to green, so you will never have to sit at another traffic light wondering when it was going to change.
Although this is just a concept at the moment, you never know we may end up seeing this feature in traffic lights in the future.

this is not just a concept… here in brazil i’ve seen so many of this type of stoplight on streets, it countsdown the time for red light AND green light

They exist in many places, in many different forms and shapes. For example these two in Japan:

I’ve also seen them counting down in seconds.
What I would really like to see is traffic lights broadcasting that kind of information on the internet, so my navigation software could recommend me an optimal speed.

This is a really cool idea, and I wonder if it will help stop people from running lights or if people will anticipate the light changing and jackrabbit out in front of someone who is running the light. Hey, I’ve seen people go from a dead stop at a red light and just pull right on through several times lately. It’s nuts.
Around here, we have those walk/don’t walk signs for pedestrians that count down to when their light is going to change. If you watch that as you’re approaching a light, you can tell if you need to go ahead and slow down because the traffic light’s about to turn red. I really like it.
