It may have been a failure at the box office, but John Carter is back. And causing some problems. According to the LA Times, Disney isn’t exactly happy with Netflix and Redbox, because they are both offering the shiny new John Carter DVD ahead of the 28-day rental window.
The problem began after Disney couldn’t close a deal with Netflix and Redbox that would see them offer new rentals after the time frame. This lead to the services buying discs off of retailers like Walmart and Target for more than twice as much as they would from the studio, but it allows them to have it available on the release date.
I’m on Netflix and Redbox’s side. This lets consumers rent the movie as soon as it is available and since Netflix and Redbox are paying for the copies legally, what can Disney really do?
