Cool Concepts – The EGG Mobile Phone
Posted 06 May. 2008 8:03 AM in Concepts by Roland Hutchinson
Check out this cool concept mobile phone from designer Roman Tubl, the Egg.
It features an iluminated red strip around the phone, and has a flexible true colour display.
The screen is a touchscreen like that of the iPhone, and it is designed to provide tactile feedback.
There is also Bluetooth, a USB port, WiFi and a 3.2 megapixel camera as well as 4GB of memory to store all your MP3 and movie files.

I love the design of this mobile phone, it looks very slick and I am sure it won’t be long before we see something similar to this from one of the major manufacturers.

This is the first concept phone that I would actually spend money on if it came into production. You could sell them in Pringles containers…

I think you mean “4GB of memory to store all your MP3s and movie files.” The apostrophe in “MP3’s” is flat-out wrong, you’re not implying possession. PLEASE for the love of god don’t do that again, grammar nazis the world over are dying in droves.

@ Matt
Thanks for the heads up on the grammar

MP3’s is perfectly acceptable. While apostrophes are used to show possession, they are also correctly used after an abbreviation (MPEG layer 3).

Apostrophes are never correctly used in any manner other than to indicate possession or open/close quotes. End of story.
May 7th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Look, let me just put it this way. If you think saying “MP3 is” (which is exactly what you’re doing if you’re not indicating possession) is an acceptable way of indicating a plural, you need to go back to school.

“Apostrophes are never correctly used in any manner other than to indicate possession or open/close quotes. End of story.”
The apostrophe can be used to
-show possessiveness (Jack’s dog)
-omission (cannot > can’t)
-some plurals like plurals of letters (i’s, b’s) for clarity, and of short words (noes could be no’s, yesses could be yes’s) and acronyms, simply because it’s more elegant and a tad more blasé.

How did this change from a conversation about a phone, to a conversation about grammar?
@matt
You don’t have to criticize everyone you see, not everyone is a perfectionist

Can’t we all just get along?!?

Irregardless, for all intensive purpose’s I think it’s just fine. (That oughta give ‘em something to chew on for a while)
May 9th, 2008 at 12:51 am
its all intents and purposes, not intensive purposes. that doesnt even make sense.
haha i didnt use an apostrophe in doesnt. there, i did it again.
May 11th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
kool fone!
May 11th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
“irregardless” is not a real word.
Stop using it, it makes you look like an idiot.
Now, me – I AM an idiot:)

STFU

Very cool phone! I really like the idea. Make it waterproof so I can bring it canoeing and I’m there!
@justjoeindenver – LOL I see what you did there.

This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever managed to stumble upon.
Not the phone, the moronic comment conversation.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:29 am
I agree… oddly, I’m still here writing a comment because of it… back to the phone idiots.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I don’t understand the appeal of all these concept phones i keep seeing on stumble upon. I mean, i could open up photoshop and not only give it a luminous red band but also make it change colors based on your mood, and project holograms, and, what the hell, run on cold fusion. It’s a concept phone. It reflects no engineering skill or technique, no technological research, nothing beyond someone with a tablet trying to submit work to their supervisor to fill their CRs for their design company.

Also:
Grammar Nazi, i suggest you go head over to Grundschule and brush up on your grammatik and zeichensetzung. An apostrophe is used in conjunction with the plural “s” only when the abbreviation is ambiguous, such as “MS’s.” MP3s, PCs, and SUVs are all examples when just an “s” is sufficient and expected.
Finally, it’s not “irregardless” dumbass. It’s “unregardless.”
May 30th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Lol, “unregardless” isn’t a word either. “Regardless” suffices.
May 30th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
By the way, cool phone.

It’s amazing how many people didn’t understand that justjoeindenver’s comment was loaded with sarcastic humor.
Concerning the grammar, well-versed grammarians find themselves disagreeing on this issue regularly. The purists would say the apostrophe is unnecessary, and they’re right. The evolving grammarians would say that any convention that is widely held by the population of a given language is the correct convention, and they’re right. Put MP3s or put MP3’s and you will find support on either side. The biggest question is: which one will win out in the end? Because after 20 years, no one will give a rat’s ass about your current opinion concerning the damn apostrophe after MP3.
Concerning the phone, nice post, nice pic, and a feasible design. A lot of the concept work done out there is purely imagination without regard to feasibility. This phone could be out in a year using today’s technology. If it does what they say, I’d be in line to buy.

The guy who said that MP3’s is correct to pluralize MP3 is correct. I believe MP3s would also be correct, but it is absolutely correct to use apostrophes to indicate the plural if the word is an acronym. Just go ask Strunk and White. And don’t start arguments if you’re wrong in the first place!
June 4th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
O and by the way, irregardless, while not as correct as regardless, certainly IS a word, recognized by most dictionaries. Go check the Merriam Webster dictionary, and again, don’t point out other people’s mistakes without checking to see if you’re right first.

LOL. It’s kind of like fishing. First, you tell people exactly what you are doing, and what manner of reaction that is anticipated. Next, you follow through, drop the line in the water with the hook fully baited. This is where it gets interesting – you’ve actually informed the fish that you are fishing, and that the item on the end of the line is bait. Amazingly, the fish start climbing all over themselves to not only take the bait, and impale themselves upon the hook, but while still attached to the hook, they insist on telling you that it is, indeed bait, and they had the need to point it out to you.
You guys crack me up.
