Convert your old videos with the Ion VCR 2 PC – USB VCR Converter
If your like me, you probably have a collection of old VCR cassetes and no VCR to play them on.
Well the guys from Ion have the answer with the VCR 2 PC, which will convert all your old video cassettes to digital files on your PC.
This idiot-proof video player allows you to convert long-forgotten VHS recordings into pristine digital files. So you can cringe at your shoulder pads in those homemade vids, laugh at Arfur’s antics in Minder, marvel at Wogan’s hair-don’t (course you videoed Eurovision) and sing along to the Shake ‘n’ Vac ad, without cracking out your soon to be obsolete VCR.
Here’s the specs.
- Convert VHS tapes to digital files to view on PCs, iPods, PSPs, DVD and other media players
- Includes Easy Video Conversion software to customise movies and burn DVDs
- Software allows you to take still images from videos
- Can convert videos from camcorder to PC, via AV sockets on the front of the device
- Works as a regular VHS player for TV playback
- RCA and USB Outputs
- Scart output
- Auto tracking and tape playback
- LED-backlit buttons
The VCR 2 PC USB VCR Converter is available to buy online for about $300 from Firebox.

I’m having problems at the beginnings of tapes – for the first 15 minutes the picture breaks up every few seconds and the sound drops out. Is this the same problem you’ve been having, Mal? I called the Ion helpdesk and they suggested fast-forwarding the tape to the end and then rewinding it, ‘to re-tension the spools’. I tried this a few times but it didn’t work.
