Fun Mods – The Pink Eraser USB Drive

There are lots of fun USB drives about today, some of the coolest ones are the ones made by moders and enthusiats, here’s a cool one from the guys over at Instructables, the Pink Eraser USB drive.

Fun Mods - The Pink Eraser USB Drive

Want to make a flash drive that nobody in a modern office would even think about taking? Hide it in a pink eraser and it’s secure in this digital age.

You can get a couple of erasers in an office supply store or an art store. They’re cheap.

The flash drive I got at an office supply store. I got a 1 gig since I barely ever use that much as I use flash drives for moving small files around. I don’t need anything bigger for now. This is also pretty cheap.

Bonus points for the pink cap on it. It was like this flash drive wanted to be in an eraser from the beginning.

If you want to make your own head on over to Instructables for full instructions, its a pretty simple mod, I am sure even I could manage this one.

Geeky Mods - The LED Origami Cube Lamp

This little LED-lit cube is much more than just a paper lantern: It’s a translucent and flexible thin-film electronic circuit that hooks up a battery to an LED, limber enough to be folded into an origami box. And the coolest thing about circuits like these? You can make them at home.

Cool Mods – Make your own indestructible USB thumb drive

Check out this funky homemade indestructible USB thumb drive called the USB Armor Drive.

Cool Mods - Make your own indestructable USB thumb drive

The aim of this project was fairly straight forward. The keychain ring on my Corsair 1GB Flash Voyager USB drive from Newegg broke, which left the poor thing prone to be left in the lab. The style of this USB mod takes inspiration from the many, many, many aluminum peripheral electronic cases found around on the Internet.

This is a great mod, and a very stylish looking USB drive, if these were on sale I would definitely buy one.

Geeky Mods – Build your own electronic post it note

We all know how useful post it notes are to remind us of the many things we have to do in our busy lives, well now you can build your very own electronic version.

The guys over at Popsci have built an electronic post it note, a very cool idea.

Geeky Mods - Build your own electronic post it note

“Pick up milk.” “Feed dog.” “Finish homemade nuclear sub.” Like many people, I can’t function without writing little reminders to myself. But using one paper sticky note after another causes a lot of clutter and can be pretty wasteful. Instead, assemble a bunch of surplus parts into a digital note system for your kitchen or office. Just write out your message with your fingertip on a computer trackpad, and it appears on an LCD screen.

When you’re done, press a button and the screen is erased. Add a rechargeable battery and an enclosure, and you have unlimited (and eco-friendly) note-making capability. The project does require some computer code to drive the LCD; you can copy it here. If you can just remember that, you’ll be good to go.

Head on over to Popsci for full instructions on how to make your own electronic post it note.

Cool Case Mods – The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

Check out this clever case mod by moder Thomas Kisner, which he built for his son.

Cool Case Mods - The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

Thomas used two Lego Star Wars Imperial Landing craft sets to build the case, inside there is an Intel D201GLY2 Mini ITX Motherboard, 1GB of Ram and a 60GB 2.5 inch Sata HDD.

The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

One day I was poking around looking for possibilities for a new Mythtv frontend machine for our bedroom. I was specifically investigating using a Mini-ITX board made by VIA. While poking around for information, I came across a new cheap Mini-ITX board made by Intel – the D201GLY2. After some checking it looked like it would not really be feasible for my plan for a Mythtv Frontend due to the speed probably being under what is required for High Definition and the build in video too week to use for HD even if it had XvMC acceleration available like the VIA does.

The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

However, I was also looking to build a 1st computer for my 9 month old son William. I knew I wanted something “kiddie” and unique to do a case mod for, and this board looked like it would be excellent for Windows XP and children’s games rarely need much in the manner of graphics capabilities so this looked like a good start.

This is a great Mod, I am sure Thomas’s son will love this as his first PC.
