Geeky Mods – Build your own electronic post it note

We all know how useful post it notes are to remind us of the many things we have to do in our busy lives, well now you can build your very own electronic version.

The guys over at Popsci have built an electronic post it note, a very cool idea.

Geeky Mods - Build your own electronic post it note

“Pick up milk.” “Feed dog.” “Finish homemade nuclear sub.” Like many people, I can’t function without writing little reminders to myself. But using one paper sticky note after another causes a lot of clutter and can be pretty wasteful. Instead, assemble a bunch of surplus parts into a digital note system for your kitchen or office. Just write out your message with your fingertip on a computer trackpad, and it appears on an LCD screen.

When you’re done, press a button and the screen is erased. Add a rechargeable battery and an enclosure, and you have unlimited (and eco-friendly) note-making capability. The project does require some computer code to drive the LCD; you can copy it here. If you can just remember that, you’ll be good to go.

Head on over to Popsci for full instructions on how to make your own electronic post it note.

Cool Case Mods – The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

Check out this clever case mod by moder Thomas Kisner, which he built for his son.

Cool Case Mods - The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

Thomas used two Lego Star Wars Imperial Landing craft sets to build the case, inside there is an Intel D201GLY2 Mini ITX Motherboard, 1GB of Ram and a 60GB 2.5 inch Sata HDD.

The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

One day I was poking around looking for possibilities for a new Mythtv frontend machine for our bedroom. I was specifically investigating using a Mini-ITX board made by VIA. While poking around for information, I came across a new cheap Mini-ITX board made by Intel – the D201GLY2. After some checking it looked like it would not really be feasible for my plan for a Mythtv Frontend due to the speed probably being under what is required for High Definition and the build in video too week to use for HD even if it had XvMC acceleration available like the VIA does.

The Lego Star Wars Imperial Lander PC

However, I was also looking to build a 1st computer for my 9 month old son William. I knew I wanted something “kiddie” and unique to do a case mod for, and this board looked like it would be excellent for Windows XP and children’s games rarely need much in the manner of graphics capabilities so this looked like a good start.

This is a great Mod, I am sure Thomas’s son will love this as his first PC.

Cool Mods – The Homemade Coffee Table PC

So we have all seen the the very clever Microsoft Surface coffee table PC, well check out this amazing homemade coffee table PC from moder extraordinaire Xylomn.

homemade table pc

I built this system as part of my disseration for the final year of my Computing Science: Software Engineering degree. Its basically a table based computer system with a camera pointing down at the screen and using pattern recognition it detects user interaction and with a piece of software I wrote images, video, audio and comments sent via bluetooth to the table are plotted on a map, its designed for collaborative interaction with multiple people using it at any one time and no matter what side of the table people are at the part of the interface that person is using rotates so its the right way up for them :)

homemade table pc

Here’s the specs.

  • ASRock ConRoe1333
  • Intel Pentium DualCore E2180
  • 2GB Corsair 800MHz

Cool Mods – The Giant Heatsink PC Case

Fancy a silent PC with no fans? then check out this amazing passively cooled PC case mod.

Cool Mods - The Giant Heatsink PC Case

The clever moder over at Metku Mods created a giant heatsink PC case to cool the components using a bunch of giant heatsinks.

When designing passive cooling, first thing you have to have is lots of surface area to dissipate the heat that a modern computer produces. The second thing to take into account is the airflow. Without fans, the airflow rests solely on convection that is a very low force. This means that the places the air must go, must be open, and clear of obstacles. Convection means that hot air goes up. This would suggest that the heatsinks are lined vertically. This in turn, suggests that the case be modeled like a tower.

The PC componets used were an Opteron 170 @ 2,4 GHz, a GeForce 6800GT, Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard, Kingston 400 MHz DDR ECC memory and a Seagate Barracuda 320 GB hard drive.

If you are interested on how the case was made head on over to Metku Mods for full instructions.

Cool Mods – Apple floppy drive amplifier

Check out this cool homemade amplifier, made with an old Apple 5-1/4 inch floppy drive.

Apple floppy drive amplifier

Apple floppy drive amplifier

Found an old 5.25″ floppy drive at a thrift store for $5.99. It reminded me of my Apple IIe childhood so I ended up buying it not knowing what I was gonna do with it. I’m a fan of anachronism and needed a better housing for my computer stereo amplifier, so decided to combine the two.

Head on over to Instructables, if you want full instructions on how to make your own.

Cool Mods – The Han Solo in Carbonite Desk

This has to be the coolest desk I have seen, it was created by Tom Spina Designs for one of their clients.

Cool Mods - The Han Solo in Carbonite Desk

We had someone looking for a highly unique desk with a space or SW theme for his home theater/home studio office. I created several designs and eventually hit upon the idea of using a Han in carbonite as the top of an combination desk and art piece.

I did the initial concept and sketches and Richard handled the details, worked with the metal shop and did the final build. Two RPF’rs also contributed resin detail pieces (where better to go than the RPF for the best parts around?).

The main “box” for the desk is custom metal, as are the computer cut side boxes which both light up with an orange glow. The piece is finished with a 1/2? thick glass table top.

This is a truly amazing desk, I would love to have one of these in my office, I bet it wasn’t cheap though.

Cool Mods – The Wii Nes Light Gun Mod

If you own a Wii and miss your NES light gun, then this mod might be for you.

Cool Mods - The Wii Nes Light Gun Mod

The guys over at AcidMods have hacked together a Wiimote and an NES Light gun to make this cool controller for your Wii.

Cool Mods - The Wii Nes Light Gun Mod

The Nintendo Gun provided a better point and shoot mechanism than the add on modules that are available for the Wiimote. This hack allows you to adapt one of the original Nintendo Guns to work with the Wiimote. Since the Wiimote uses an IR camera to look at the sensor bar that sensor needs to be removed and installed in the tip of the gun.

Check out this video of it in action.
