We have seen quite a few cool PC case mods here at geeky gadgets, the latest one is this cool ION Cube PC Case Mod, from Bill Owen from Mnpctech.

The ION Cube PC Case Mod won first place in NVIDIA’s ION case mod contest, and the mod consists of a Zotac Nvidia ION 330 ITX A-U Motherboard, which is ready to go out of the box, memory and a hard drive was added, and it was ready to go.

The Zotac Nvidia ION 330 ITX A-U Motherboard is nearly ready-to-run out of the box. All you add is memory, hard drive and O.S. This makes it less intimidating to first time PC builders and more affordable to d-i-y enthusiasts. If you’re planning to build a HTPC. It produces a crisp picture @ 1080p HDMI. It has 1.3 output support, optional dual monitor, 7.1 channel uncompressed audio output. Coaxial and optical audio output and Blu-ray decode acceleration.

Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock

We have seen quite a few different homemade iPod and iPhone docks here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool retro iPod Dock by Peter Verrando, the Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock.

This cool iPod dock was made using a Philco Dynamic Tester from 1946, which is was small amplifier and speaker with an external probe that was used for fixing audio equipment.

The cabinet features a 10 watt solid state amplifier, together with a 5 1/4 inch Blaupunkt coaxial loudspeaker with a ceramic magnet, and it features a side panel with bass and treble controls as well as left and right RCA line inputs, plus two 1/4 inch jack inputs, and the iPod dock is plugged into the side panel.

DIY Arduino Word Clock

Some of our readers will remember the Qlocktwo clock, that display the time in words rather than numbers, now you can make your own DIY version using the power of Arduino.

The clock can be made with a bunch of materials which include some LEDs, a CNC plotter and a laser printer.

Last month I wanted to build a special gift for my beautiful wife, Megan. She has a teaching background in English, so what better present to make for her than a clock that uses language to tell the time for her desk at work.

The original project that I created used a Microchip PIC microcontroller (16F877), because that’s what I had in the garage. Since I published it (http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Word-Clock/), quite a few people, including my next door neighbor (Thanks Mikal) have asked me why I didn’t use an Arduino. Having never used one, my automatic reaction to Mikal was ‘Whats a one of those??” So, I did some research and found out what an Arduino was. Wow – they are so cool – so simple to develop for, and the barrier to entry is so low!. I ordered one from eBay, and re-designed the clock to use the Arduino Duemilanove as the controller.

The Coaster Controlled HTPC

The guys over at Roteno Labs have come up with a cool way to control a HTPC to select the content you want, the project is called the RFiDJ Project and it uses a series of coasters fitted with RFID tags.

When a different coaster is place on the HTPC the server begins streaming that selection, from specific albums to podcasts to local news, check out the video of it in action below.

Very cool, it looks like a great idea and certainly would be a lot more fun to use than a remote, head on over to Roteno Labs for more details.

NES Console Joystick Mod

We have already seen a cool joystick made from a dead Xbox, now we have this awesome joystick made using an NES console, the NEStickle.

The NEStickle was made from an old NES console, plus a Sanwa joystick and buttons, it is compatible with the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 as well as a range of computers including Windows PCs, Mac and Linux.

It also has an NES controller which plugs into the controller slot on the NES, and this is used to conceal the USB cable that plugs into your Xbox or PS3.

The Secret Knock Detecting Door Lock

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just knock on your front door, and have it open automatically without having to fumble around with your keys, then you might need one of these Secret Knock Detecting Door Lock’s which was made using an arduino, a motor and a piezo sensor.

Check out the video of it in action below, if someone just knocks on your door, it wont open, but if the use the secret knock which can be programmed into the gadget, the door will automatically unlock.

Very cool I think I may have to get one of these installed in the Geeky Gadgets office, although knowing our luck some would-be thief would probably figure out the secret knock.

LED Pocket Watch

We have seen quite a few different LED watches here at Geeky Gadgets, but I think this might be the first LED Pocket Watch.

The LED Pocket Watch was created Paul who created the watch from a broken pocket watch that was left to him by his grandfather.

Paul used an Elgin hunter style case, along with some LEDS, a total of 133 surface mounted LEDs, each one was soldered by hand, and there are 60 for the minutes, 60 for the seconds and 12 for the hours, and one for showing the charging status, check out the video of it in action below.

My grandfather was a horologist. When he passed away in 2005 I inherited from him a collection of broken pocketwatches. As my skills are in microelectronics, rather than micromechanics, I felt it would be a fitting tribute to him to produce an electronic movement in place of one of the broken ones he’d never had the time to fix.

The pocketwatch I selected was an Elgin hunter-style case (with opening cover), and appeared to be the most complete and in the best condition of those available. It’s movement inside was stamped “Pat. 1925″. It was also one of the largest to choose from, providing room for batteries and components inside. I resolved that no modifications or damage should be done to the pocketwatch case, or its movement.

Dell Mini 9 Tablet Mod

We have seen quite a few different tablet PC mods here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one was made using a Dell Mini 9 Netbook.

The Dell Mini 9 Tablet Mod is the work of Rob928 from the MyDellMini Forums, Rob used a Dell Vostro A90 which is the business model of the Mini 9 and a Hoda Technology solderless touchscreen.

Rob also upgraded the SSD to a 16GB version, and also inside is 1GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth and an Intel Atom Processor.

The Dell Mini 9 Tablet Mod runs Windows 7, I think he did a pretty good job on it it looks very cool, head on over to MyDellMini forums for more details on this cool Dell Mini 9 Tablet Mod.

NES Controller USB Drive with built in security

We have seen a few different USB drives made out of old NES controllers before on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one was created by Joe from ProtoDojo, and it features built in security.

When the USB drive is plugged into the PC, nothing happens until you enter the Konami code via the controller buttons, check out the video of it in action below.

It’s fairly straight forward. The arduino constantly polls the controller for button states. When you push a button, it stores that value in an array which always holds the most recent 10 values. Whenever you push the start button, it checks the stored array against a separate array which contains the values for the konami code.

NES Cartridge Console Mod

Here is another cool NES cartridge mod, this one is definitely one of the coolest we have seen so far, the NES Cartridge Console Mod.

The modder Airz has managed to turn this NES cartridge into a handheld NES using an NES emulator and a 2.8 inch TFT LCD screen, check out the video of it in action after the jump.

It’s got 4gb built in memory, with a sd card slot in the inside so you could expand the memory if needed, and not only does it play nes games, but it also plays gameboy and gameboy color roms as well. 2.8” TFT LCD, built-in rechargeable lithium battery, Video player, MP3 player, FM radio, Picture viewer, Audio recorder, it’s got a camera and video camera (but I disabled them to fit in the case), built in speaker, and the best part… TV-OUT !!! so you can play on the big screen!

The unit has 2 additional buttons on the front, ones power, and the other is used to navigate the main menu, basically it’s a ‘back’ button. And there is a small hole drilled in the back with a reset button behind it.

Project ‘Cool’ Boombox PC Case Mod

We have seen a few different PC case mods here on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one from modder JJ-Sky5000, which was created for a Coolermaster contest is definitely ones of the coolest we have seen so far, the Project ‘Cool’ Boombox PC Case Mod.

The mod was made using an old boombox from 1990, along with a Foxconn Bloodrage motherboard, 6GB of crucial Ballstix RAM, 2 x EVGA 280 GTX SLI graphics cards and some Danger Den water cooling.

Inside the boombox PC case mod there is also a 300GB Velociraptor hard drive, with a total of 1.5 TB of storage.

Here is another fun homemade iPhone dock for today, the Wooden Automata iPhone Dock.

The Wooden Automata iPhone Dock uses a hand crank system to switch the iPhone from landscape to portrait mode, check out the video of it in action below.

For an iPhone dock, I wanted it to be able to change from portrait to landscape mode. And here’s where the Automata comes into the picture. I decided to create a mechanism which would enable me to change iPhone’s orientation using arrangements of wooden gears.

We have seen quite a few of Ben Hecks amazing laptops before on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool PS3 Slim Laptop.

The PS3 Slim Laptop features a 17 inch Gateway 1775W screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution, it features a front loading Blu-ray drive, and a funky fan grill on the front which looks like an Iron Man Arc reactor, check out the video of it in action below.

Very cool, this is definitely one of the best laptops we have seen from Ben to date.

Check out this amazing replica of the Batmobile built by someone from Sweden, the replica Batmobile took three and a half years to make, with over 20,000 hours to complete.

The replica was built using a 1973 Lincoln Continental, and the whole project cost over $1 million US dollars.

The replica Batmobile is packed with gadgets and has built in satellite navigation, voice recognition, machine guns, reversing cameras, a DVD player, a Plasma TV and even height adjustable bodywork.

This realistic mechanical tumor is attached to your PC and allows you to visually see the amount of work and strain your putting on your poor processor and components. As your PC works harder and faster so the tumor grows and pulsates. Check out the full gory video after the jump.

Created by Japanese interactive media artist Mio I-zawa. The tumor is equipped with a series of motors and pneumatic actuators which help the mechanical tumor pulsates gently when the CPU load is low but crank it up and get the CPU load high and the tumor’s air compressor is activated causing the lump of flesh to inflate.

We have seen a few different home made arcade machines here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool Steampunk Arcade Machine.

The Steampunk Arcade Machine was created by steampunk fan Dough Haffner, this is definitely one of the coolest arcade cabinets we have seen so far.

I thought it would be fun to combine all that into a MAME (multiple arcade machine emulator) cabinet to play video games and use as a jukebox. I found all kinds of inspiration at places like Stelter Creative’s website, The Steampunk Workshop and many others.

The cabinet wouldn’t be nearly as fun or interesting were it not for my CarveWright carving machine, which I use almost every day. I used it for the Lithopanes and the marquee sign and much more. One last note, the image of Frankenstein in the lithopane is from a piece of art by Rick Baker

Wayne Eyre, a steampunk fan has turned his den into the ultimate steampunk themed room, the Steampunk Submarine Room.

The Steampunk Submarine Room is designed to look like a shipwrecked submarine, and it even features ‘plutonium leaking’ torpedoes, as well as a projector and screen, plus a custom sound system.

The Steampunk Submarine Room cost Wayne $100,000 New Zealand dollars to make , about $72,000 US, and was made using custom peices of MDF, which were then sprayed with concrete and touch up to look like rusted steel beams.

The room even has its own working periscope, along with a full sized bar and some leather recliners.

We have seen quite a few different mods featuring everyone’s favourite droid R2-D2 on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one features R2-D2 with 8 different games consoles stuffed inside him and a total of 20 game controllers connected too him.

The mod was made using an R2-D2 cooler, I suppose it is now put to better use housing all the games consoles instead of keeping the owners beer cool.

Inside R2-D2 there is a Dreamcast, a Nintendo 64, an Xbox, an Atari 2600, a Sega Saturn, an NES, an SNES and a PlayStation, on top of that there is also a built in sound system and a projector.

Check out this cool Wall-E Email Alerter from Totoryo Tamada, called Mail-E.

This fun Wall-E email alerter is made from papercraft, plus a few other parts, and when an email is received Mail-E moves about to let you know you have received a new email, check out the video of him in action below.

The robot is actuated by three 9g mini-servos, and controlled by a SD21 servo driver and a picaxe 18x… i know, it’s a bit like killing a mouse with a rocket launcher, it’s just that i want to get used to the board before building my next robot, but i have to order a bunch of 08M for that kind of experimentation, as soon as i get them i’ll do the brain transplantation.”

DIY Speakers made from Hard Drives

Well this is a first I never thought you would be able to make speakers from computer hard drives but hey here they are. This pair of 20GB hard drives have been combined and enclosed in a acrylic case together with a VU meter to give it a lovely techie glow.

The hard drives are connected to a 10W stereo amplifier and use electro-magnetics to move the read write head. The polarity of the current determines which way the head moves. In an audio signal the peaks and troughs are opposite polarities, meaning the head vibrates with an audio signal. This, combined with vibrating against the platters of the hard drive, make the sound.

Stargate Pyramid HTPC Casemod

Some of our readers will remember the cool Pyramid PC that we featured on the site back in March, here is a new version created my Modder Gup, and I think this one is even cooler than the last version.

Gup’s Pyramid HTPC casemod was inspired by Stargate, it features a moving side panel and built in lights which are all operated by remote control.

Inside the Pyramid HTPC is an Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo processor, Mini-Itx Crommel LV-677 motherboard, 2GB of DDR2 Ram and a 160GB hard drive, plus a Gforce 9400GT graphics card, plus an LCD display.

Ben Heck has completed his latest project, and I think this one is one of the coolest one we have seen from Ben to date, the Atari 800 Laptop.

Earlier this year I finished the long-gestating Commodore 64 laptop. It turned out great, and looked properly old. This left me conflicted however – I wasn’t a Commodore guy, but I had done a much better job on it than my beloved 800’s.

This year that all changed! Someone requested I build them an Atari 800 laptop, and I decided to go full out and not only beat my own C64, but make it perhaps my coolest project ever.

Steampunk Nixie Clock

There have been quite a few new Nixie clocks over the last couple of weeks here on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is the work of UK artist Kev Stenning, the Steampunk Nixie Clock.

The Steampunk Nixie Clock measures 213mm tall, by 167mm wide and 399m long, it is made from Pyrex toughened glass, solid copper and brass machined parts and it features six IN-18 Nixie Tubes.

The Steampunk Nixie Clock will be made in a limited run of just 10 clocks, there is no word on pricing, asit is POA, so you know this is going to be one expensive clock.

POV Hard Drive Clock

The POV Hard Drive Clock was created by Polish modder mb1988, and it was made using an ATMEGA128 micro controller, some LEDs and a hard drive, check out the video of it in action below.

POV Hard Drive Clock

Single Tube Nixie Clock

After receiving an IN-8 tube from a friend, [Trax] wanted to find some way to show it off and decided create a piece art that doubles as a clock, it uses a low voltage plug in wall transformer and makes the high voltage needed to run the clock.

The IN-8 tube is lit from beneath using a green LED that pulses every second. A button on the back is pressed to show the time. Check out the video after the jump.

“With PIC microcontroller I used a “watch” crystal at 32,768kHz. It’s value is pretty cool and now we will see why. PIC16F84 has internal TMR0 counter that increments itself no matter what the PIC is doing at the moment. Think of it as a threaded sub-program. This counter can generate an interrupt when it’s value overflows from 255->0. We can also prescale this counter to slow it down a bit so we can make it generate an interrupt on every 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 overflows. So, when we finally connect our 32,768kHz crystal on PIC microcontroller, we should also know that the speed it runs at is divided by 4 and this characteristic is only found with PIC microcontrollers. This all means that our PIC runs at 8,192kHz which tells us that TMR0 will overflow 32 times per second. Now when we prescale it by 32 it means that it will overflow once per second and generate us an interrupt.”

These mini mechanical hands from Japan’s Crafthouse allow you to give your friendly robot a full set of digits making it that little bit more human. Unfortunately though each finger is not independently controlled. Check out the video after the jump.

The top of the line hands cost around $1935 plus $171 per hand on a Kondo KRS-4014SHV servo motor to drive each one but Crafthouse is offering a pair of Melissa Hand Type-1 around $645.

Game Boy Hard Drive Case Mod

What do you do with your old Nintendo Game Boy when it stops working? modder [_n30_] decided to turn his broken Game Boy into a portable hard drive.

Inside the case there is an 80GB 2.5 inch HDD, from the photos it looks like the Game Boy is still working, the reflective backing has been removed from the screen and replaced by a piece of paper with graphics on it.

We have seen quite a few different PC casemods here on geeky gadgets, this one is definitely one of the more unique mods we have seen, the Mini Cooker PC Casemod.

The Mini Cooker PC Casemod was created by Czech modder Zbyšek, and it is a replica of his full sized cooker and even features blue LED gas burners.

Zbyšek built the Mini Cooker PC Casemod from scratch and everything was built by hand, inside there is a Pentium D820 3.5GHz processor, 2GB of DDR2 Ram, and graphics comes in the form of an NVIDIA 9600GT card.

This is definitely one of the coolest mods we have seen so far, I suspect it took some serious effort to built this Mini Cooker PC, and it looks really realistic.

Here is another cool PC Mod, this one is made using an antique radio, a tombstone style Deco radio, from the front it just looks like an old radio and you wouldnt know there is a PC inside.

Swapped Xbox 360 Controller

Here is another cool mod from Ben Heck, this one was made at the request of one of his customers, the Swapped Xbox 360 Controller.

As you can see from the photos, the d-pad and action buttons have been swapped, also the left and right triggers have been swapped and Ben has also fitted an extra set of X Y B A buttons on the back.

Whilst it seems like a cool idea, I am not sure how easy it would be to use, it would probably take me a few weeks to learn to play certain games again with the buttons in opposite positions.

We are still awaiting official news from Apple on the much rumored Apple Tablet, in the meantime here is a cool Apple Tablet mod, the MacCores iTab Mini.

I have to admit from the photos, the MacCores iTab Mini looks very cool, it features a 12.1 SVGA resistive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1400 x 1050 and a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor.

Other specifications include 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Firewire, Ethernet and a built in rechargeable battery.

We absolutely love anything to do with Steampunk here on Geeky Gadgets, and when I spotted this cool handmade Steampunk USB drive I thought it looked very cool until I noticed the price.

Most of the stuff that appears on Etsy seems to be reasonably priced, unfortunately this isn’t one of those items, as you will have to part with $3,000 to get your hands on it.

For that price I would expect it to be made from a precious metal, sadly it is made from brass and copper, and whilst we think it looks really cool, I am still unsure why it is being sold for $3,000, unless it was a typo and it should be $300.

If you have a lot of spare cash, and fancy a unique USB drive, then head on over to WillRockwell’s shop over at Etsy.

DIY Nintendo Arcade Cabinet

This cool DIY Nintendo arcade cabinet was made from the guys over at Instructables, using an old PC, a 17 inch LCD monitor, some plexiglass and some MDF.

Inside is an old PC and a 17″ LCD monitor. The back of the cabinet has two USB ports and two NES controller ports. You can connect regular, un-modded NES controllers and play with those or use the joystick and buttons on the control panel.

The front end is a simple VB program that auto loads when the PC boots. You never need to connect a mouse or keyboard to load your games. The VB program gives a list of games installed. Using the joystick, you can select the game you want to play.

We have seen quite a few funky Steampunk creations here at Geeky Gadgets, here is one I am not sure I would want to use every day, the Steampunk Skull Mouse.

The Steampunk Skull Mouse was made using a sheep skull, and according to the modder, no sheep were harmed in the making of this mouse, as the sheep died from natural causes.

It certainly is different, mind you I don’t think I would like this mouse sat on my desk, I doubt I would get any work.

If you are bored with the look of your iPod Shuffle and have a spare Wiimote lying around then you could make one of these fun WiiPod iPod mods.

This fun iPod mod was made by a Japanese modder using a fake iPod shuffle.

The modder has basically put the fake iPod Shuffle inside the battery compartment of his Wiimote, and then cut a hole for the headphone jack.

Xbox Micro Mod

Check out this cool Xbox Micro Mod, made using an original Xbox and measuring just 1 inch thick.

The Xbox Micro Mod is the work of modder Bandit5317 from the Xbox Scene forums, and it measures a tiny 23.5 x 21.65 x 2.5 cm.

The case is made out of 1/8″ thick (3mm) polycarbonate and consists of 4 panels. 3 of the panels were held together with epoxy and plastic welder to form the base. The top panel is supported by 4 posts which it screws into. All of the panels were made with the usual tools, so it doesn’t quite have that laser-cut precision, but I think it came out alright.

Inside the Xbox Micro is a 320GB 2.5 inch HDD, a v.14 motherboard, and a PW-200-V PSU, and it took the modder 6 months to build this tiny Xbox mod.

This has to be one of the coolest SNES case mods we have seen so far on geeky gadgets, made by French modder darthchris13, the SNESP V2.

Not only did darthchris13 make this amazing SNES portable, but he also made a custom box for it as well.

It features a 2.5 inch display, an integrated speaker, and custom writing on the front which makes it look like it was made by Nintendo rather than a modder.

Check out this fun robot which was made by Ken Lim, it is designed to monitor your Twitter feed and then react to it, the Guardian Robot.

The Guardian Robot is designed to encourage you to interact with posts it find on Twitter, and it monitors Twitter for happy or sad updated from your friends.

The Guardian Robot can even send a Retweet on your behalf from its own Twitter address @guardianrobot.

It was made using two servos, two microswitches, and a few other parts and it cost Ken around $70 to make, check out the video of it in action below.

Here is a fun homemade speaker for your iPod or iPhone or MP3 player, made by Zackaholic, using a retro telephone.

The Retro Telephone iPod Speaker is definitely one of the coolest homemade speakers we have seen to play the music you just lift the handset of the phone, check out the video of it in action below.

As you can see from the video the number pad has been removed from the phone and replaced with a speaker, very cool!

Asus still hasn’t released its much anticipated Asus Eee Keyboard PC, so one modder who couldn’t wait has decided to make their own version using an Asus Eee PC 900.

This cool keyboard PC mod is the work or Russian modder Mike_ap who used a Sven Multimedia EL 402 keyboard and parts from an Asus Eee PC 900.

This is definitely one of the coolest mods we have seen here on geeky gadgets, and the homemade Asus Eee Keyboard PC has a 900 MHz Intel Mobile Celeron processor, 1GB of RAM, a 20GB SSD and built in WiFi.

XCM has just released a sweet looking case for the Xbox 360 which allows you to select a permanent colour or allow it to rotate through a predefined rainbow of red-purple-green-yellow-blue-apple green-orange. You also get an illuminated fan shroud replacement but currently the case only works on HDMI-equipped 360’s.

You will need to remove your old case, which they say will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. XCM provides everything you need to move the case and full instructions can be found here.
