SmartScreen iPhone App Now Available

Some of our readers will remember the SmartScreen iPhone App that we featured back in September, we just got an email from the developers, and the good news is that the app is now available from Cydia.

The SmartScreen iPhone App lets your program your own widgets and place them on the lock screen of your iPhone, it will only work on jailbroken iPhone, check out the video of it in action below.

SmartScreen is an application for the iPhone and iPod touch that will allow informational widgets to be placed and used on the lock screen. Widgets are similar to those offered by Apple’s “Dashboard” and they follow this familiar look and feel.

The SmartScreen iPhone App is now available in two versions from Cydia from http://apt.media-phone.ch/, SmartScreen Lite which is available as a free download, and a full version which is available for $5.00.

In order to use the SmartScreen iPhone App you will need a Jailbroken iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Cisco has launched a free application for the iPhone and iPod Touch, that is designed to provide you with customized alerts of new security threats and more information on safe web browsing.

The Application is powered by Security Intelligence Operations, and it is designed to inform, protects, and enables you to respond to alerts and real-time threats to your network and users.

Customized threat alerts, new security signatures, mitigation bulletins, all the up to the second info you need delivered right to your iPhone in real time.

The App is called Cisco SIO To Go, and it is available now as a free download from iTunes

The iPhone has tons of different apps, that can carry out a wide variety of functions, the latest app to hit the app store is called Blower, and it manages to blow air out of the bottom of the iPhone speaker, check out the video of it in action below.

Is there nothing the iPhone can’t do? Now you will be able to use your iPhone to blow out the candles on your birthday cake.

The Blower iPhone app is available for $0.99 from iTunes.

Magellan Launches RoadMate iPhone App And Car Kit

The latest company to launch a satellite navigation application for the iPhone is Magellan with the launch of their RoadMate iPhone App, together with that they have also launched a car kit accessory.

The Magellan RoadMate is similarly priced to the previous sat nav iPhone apps we have seen, it is available for $79.99 from iTunes.

The Magellan RoadMate App for iPhone uses the same award-winning, easy-to-use interface as our dedicated personal navigation devices. Premium features include spoken street names and directions, highway lane guidance, 3D landmarks, in-app music control, pedestrian mode and more. Best of all, the Magellan App is a one-time purchase with no subscription or monthly fees.

As well as the launch of the App, Magellan will be selling a car kit for the iPhone, although they havent released any details on pricing or availability as yet.

Google Updates Google Earth iPhone App

Google [GOOG] has updated it Google Earth iPhone app, the updates comes just over a year after the original Google Earth iPhone App was released.

Google Earth 2.0 is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the new version has a range of new features, which include the ability to view maps that you create on your PC on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Other Features include an updated icon selection, which now makes it easier to use, and when you touch an icon on the app it will glow, and if you touch more than one icon at once it will take you to a list of icons so you can select the correct one.

The new Google Earth iPhone App now supports more than 31 different languages as opposed to 18 on the original version.

Google Earth 2.0 is now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch as a free download from iTunes.

Ravensword – The Fallen King iPhone App

One of the games I have been looking forward to for the iPhone and iPod Touch, is Ravensword: The Fallen King, which is now available in iTunes from today.

Ravensword is a 3D role playing game with a main quest line and also a range of side quests, and according to the developers the game will take around 6 to 8 hours to complete, without doing any of the side quests.

Enter the world of Ravensword: The Fallen King; a massive, sandbox-style adventure for the iPhone and iPod touch. Combining 3D action with RPG elements, Ravensword features rich and interactive environments that bring you a gaming experience unlike anything you’ve seen on the iPhone platform. Speed Forge Extreme iPhone App

iPhone games developers RatSquare have released details of their latest game that is coming to the iPhone, Speed Forge Extreme, and from the video below, it looks amazing.

Speed Forge Extreme uses OpenlGL ES 2.0 support on the iPhone 3GS, which enable full screen motion blur effects in the game, check out the video of it in action below.

Although the game is obviously a copy of Sony’s Wipeout, it still looks pretty amazing, and the graphics look really good, this is one game I am looking forward to seeing on the iPhone.

There are no details as yet on when it will be available on the iPhone or how much its will cost, the developers are also planning a version of the game for Android handsets.

Manomio’s Commodore 64 iPhone App Is Back

Some of our readers will remember the Commodore 64 iPhone emulator App that Apple pulled from their App store back in September, because users were able to enable basic on the application through a simple hack.

The good news is that the Commodore 64 emulator iPhone App is now back in the iPhone App store, and it has had a few changed made to it.

Manomio have obviously removed the ability to enable basic on the application, and other changes include a 30% performance improvement, as well as some new games which include International Tennis, International Baseball and International Basketball.

Lets hope they haven’t tried to sneak anything past Apple this type, and the Commodore 64 iPhone App will stay in the App store for more than a few days.

Mozilla iPhone App Coming Soon

It looks like Mozilla will be launching an app for the Apple [AAPL] iPhone, according to Mozilla CEO John Lilly “Mozilla will release an app to the iPhone App Store in the next few weeks. … It’ll surprise people”.

He also revealed that the AwesomeBar and Weave, which gives you access to store bookmarks and history will be part of the Mozilla iPhone app.

It will be interesting to see exactly what the Mozilla iPhone App does, I doubt it will feature a Firefox browser as this would competition for Apple’s Safari browser so they would probably not approve it.

It would be great to have a choice of different browsers on the iPhone, something I don’t think we will see anytime soon.

Rock Bank iPhone App Now Available

We told you earlier this month that EA games would be releasing Rock Band for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, the good news is that Rock Band is now available from iTunes.

Rock Band for the iPhone and iPod Touch features a multi player mode that lets you play with up to four people over Bluetooth, it also has a built in feature that lets you invite your friends from Facebook to play the game.

The game comes with a range of songs from the Beastie Boys, Motorhead, Blondie and lots more, and you will also be able to purchase additional tracks as well.

Rock Band for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available now form the US iTunes store for $9.99, it looks like it isn’t available from the UK store as yet.

Canon is the latest company to launch a free iPhone application that will let users print directly from their iPhone to Canon PIXMA wireless printer over WiFi, the Canon Easy Photo-Print iPhone App.

The Canon Easy Photo-Print iPhone App can print on a range of different paper sizes and typed, and it will even let you print multiple photos at once, it also has the ability to print multiple copies of individual photos up to a maximum of 20.

A new free app has just been added to the Apple App store called Viper SmartStart which allows you to lock or unlock your car. If that wasn’t enough it also allows you to open the trunk and actually start the engine. Check out the video after the jump…

The iPhone app connects via the cell phone network to a hardware module installed in your car which controls the five functions

Because your using the cell phone to communicate with your car distance is no problem either.

Photoshop has released a mobile version of Photoshop for the Apple iPhone, Photoshop Mobile iPhone App.

The Photoshop Mobile iPhone App lets you crop, rotate and change color of your photos using the iPhone’s touchscreen, plus add various other effects to your photos.

AT&T Approves VoIP Apps over its 3G Network

You will now be able to make Skype calls over 3G with AT&T who have just approved Voip to be used over their 3G network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. It will also open the door for more VoIP apps very shortly we are sure.

“iPhone is an innovative device that dramatically changed the game in wireless when it was introduced just two years ago,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. “Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer.”

Here is a cool app for your iPhone, the IP Camera iPhone app which turns your iPhone into a security camera.

The IP Camera iPhone app takes a photo with your iPhones camera every 12 to 15 seconds, the photos are then posted to a local web page which can be accessed from other computers on the network.

This certainly looks like a fun iPhone App, and would be great to use at work, to capture you coworkers, I may have to try it in the Geeky Gadgets office.

The founder of Digg Kevin Rose has been spotted playing with the a Digg iPhone app in London while attending the Future of Web Apps conference.

The Crave crew he was hanging out with tried to get more information but Rose was tight lipped and said “You’re not even supposed to know about that.”

The mobile version of the site includes iPhone scrolling, mini-permalink pages with the top five comments, and digging ability. It will be interesting to see how it integrates with the mobile Safari browser.

Apple [AAPL] has today announced another milestone it its massively popular iPhone and iPod Touch App store, they have now reached a massive 2 billi0n iPhone apps downloaded.

The news comes just five month after Apple announced, back in April that their app store had reached a massive 1 Billion downloads, and shows just how popular the iPhone and the app store is.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

The iPhone app store has over 85,000 apps available to download and there are now more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch owners worldwide, and 125,000 developers in Apple’s developer program.

SmartScreen is an applictaion for the iPhone and iPod Touch that lets you place informational widgets on your iPhone’s lock screen, and the widgets have a similar look to the ones on Apple’s dashboard.

The SmartScreen iPhone App has been developed by a company called MediaPhone, who will also be releasing an SDK for it so users and developers will be able to program their own widgets, check out the video of it in action after the break.

The application will work on all models of iPhone and iPod touch that run OS 3.x, unfortunately due to the nature of the product it will not be available for purchase in the Apple AppStore but will be sold to customers of jailbroken phones via alternate means.

A SmartScreen SDK will be available to everyone in November 2009 but widget developers are being selected to participate in a Beta programme.

We wont see SmartScreen in the iPhone App store anytime soon, if you want to use it when it is released you will need to have a jailbrokemn iPhone, head on over to MediaPhone for more details.

Bionic Eye is a cool iPhone app that was designed for the iPhone 3GS and it lets you visualize point of interest on your iPhone 3GS using augmented reality.

The app highlights restaurants, WiFi spots, subway stations with a total of 100,000 points of interest throughout the US, and there is also a version that will work in the UK, France and Tokyo, check out the video of it in action below.

Very cool, it looks like a fun app, it will also work on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch, but it displays a Google Map rather than the video with the augmented reality.

Apple Pulls Commodore 64 Emulator App Due To Basic Hack

Yesterday we told you that the previously turned down Commodore 64 iPhone Emulator app, was now available in iTunes, the reason it was turned down by Apple was that users of the app could run Basic on the emulator which is against Apples SDK terms and conditions.

When we reported on the approval of the app yesterday, it appeared that Basic had been removed from the App, and this was why it was approved.

It seems like the creators of the Commodore 64 Emulator App Manomio tried to sneak Basic past Apple, as it could be activated with a simple hack.

According to Manomio, they left basic in the emulator in the hope that it could be remotely activated by them in the future once they have had Apple’s approval, here is what they had to say about it.

Unfortunately Apple this night pulled the C64 App from the App Store. We had agreed with Apple to remove basic from the application, but as we believed it would be possible to convince Apple to let it in later on, we left it in the app to be activated remotely by us when we had “go” from Apple.

Due to the extreme publicity the app has received over the weekend and the fact that several users found a way to enable the basic back, Apple decided to remove the app from App Store until we have solved the issue.

This is very frustrating as we had no intention of tricking basic into the app and the fix was done in a few minutes the moment we found out – a new version has been submitted to Apple, and we can only hope Apple will appreciate our efforts to apply the changes they need in order to put it back on.

There is no word on when a new version will be approved by Apple and when it will appear in iTunes.

We mentioned the other week that Apple has approved the Spotify iPhone App, well it looks like it is now available as a free download from iTunes.

Spotify is a music subscription service that streams music direct to your iPhone, the main difference between Spotify and other music streaming Apps is that it lets you download the music direct to your iPhone, and then you can listen to your playlists when your iPhone isn’t connect to 3G or WiFi.

You’ve seen the demos, we’ve gotten the approvals and now Spotify is mobile.

Today we’re really excited to announce that Spotify is available to our premium subscribers for the iPhone, iPod Touch and Android platforms. The Spotify app is downloadable in both Apple’s App Store and the Android Market.

Spotify is now available as a free download from iTunes, and there is also an Android version available as well, link below to the iTunes version.

The first emulator app has appeared in the iPhone app store, the Commodore 64 Emulator iPhone App from Manomio.

The Commodore 64 Emulator iPhone App was rejected from the App store by Apple earlier this year, it has had a few changes made to it like BASIC has been disabled and it now now been approved by Apple.

GTA Chinatown Wars for the iPhone

Rockstar Games has announced that they will be releasing an iPhone version of their Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars game, which is currently available for the Nintendo DS.

Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod Touch,” Rockstar’s Sam Houser told Kotaku, “We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple’s new gaming platforms.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will also be coming to the Sony PSP and will be available in October, Rockstar have said that the iPhone and iPod version of Chinatown Wars will be released in the fall.

Spotify iPhone App gets approved by Apple

Apple (AAPL) has finally Approved Spotify for the iPhone, although the App hasn’t gone live in iTunes, Apple and Spotify have both confirmed that it has been approved and that it will appear in the iPhone App store shortly.

Spotify is a music subscription service that streams music direct to your PC or Mac, and it will now stream the music direct to your iPhone when the Spotify iPhone App is available from the App store.

The main difference between Spotify and other music streaming Apps is that it lets you download the music direct to your iPhone, and then you can listen to your playlists when your iPhone isn’t connect to 3G or WiFi.

At the moment Spotify is only available in Europe, there is no word on when it will be rolled out the the US, but I am sure it wont be long as I am sure Spotify will have a lot of US iPhone users wanting to try their service out.

It looks like Apple has finally approved the latest version of the Facebook iPhone App, version 3.0, which has a host of new features.

The latest version of Facebook for the iPhone has been awaiting approval from Apple for a couple of weeks, and it looks like it finally got approval.

Here are some of the new features in the Facebook 3.0 iPhone App.

1. The “new” News Feed
2. Like
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Notes
5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos
to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

The latest version of Facebook for the iPhone is available as a free download from iTunes.

Rhapsody iPhone App

Rhapsody for the iPhone and iPod Touch has been submitted to Apple for approval, if it is approved it will offer on demand music streaming to Rhapsody subscribers over 3G and WiFi.

In the past Apple hasn’t approved music streaming apps, as they are obviously concerned about competition with iTunes, if Rhapsody is approved it will give iPhone users access to over 8 million tracks and all of its radio stations.

Other features will include being able to create playlists, as well as being able to sync your existing playlists in your Rhapsody account.

Whether or not Apple will approve the Rhapsody iPhone App remains to be seen, but it does have a better chance of being approved as it doesn’t actually cache music and requires a constant connection to stream tunes to your iPhone.

The Rhapsody iPhone App also features buy links, which will let you buy a tune direct from iTunes, this may encourage Apple to approve it because it could bring in more sales from existing Rhapsody users.

If the Rhapsody iPhone App is approved it will be available as a free download, but you will have to subscribe to Rhapsody’s To Go service which costs $15.00 per month.

TomTom iPhone App Now Available For $100

We told you about the TomTom Navigation iPhone App, a while back, well it looks like it is now available from the US iTunes store for $99.99.

The TomTom iPhone App turns your iPhone into a fully fledged turn by turn Sat Nav device, it features both 2D and 3D maps, and to be honest $99.99 does seem expensive considering there are alternatives on the market, like CoPilot Live which only costs $34.99.

On top of that if you want to use it like a regular Sat Nav you will also have to buy the TomTom car adapter kit, the pricing on this hasn’t been revealed yet, but it is probably going to cost around $100 or more.

USAA Bank Lets You Deposit A Check With Your iPhone

USAA Bank has released an iPhone App that will let the banks customers deposit a check using their iPhone.

The application works by the user taking a photo of the check, then entering the amount to be deposited and clicking send, the photo of the check is then automatically sent to the bank and deposited in your account.

You don’t need to send the cheque into the bank, and it can be destroyed once your funds have cleared.

I think is is probably one of the most useful iPhone Apps we have seen so far, lets hope other banks start to use the iPhone for check deposits as it certainly would make life easier.

If you’re as big a fan as I am of the old Duke Nukem game. You’ll be pleased to know that this classic first person shooter is now available on your iPhone. The controls take a little getting used to a once mastered all the old memories come flooding back.

The slider style controls are slightly different to other games I have seen on the iPhone and work very well together with the TapShoot.

This is definitely ones of the coolest iPhone Apps we have seen so far on Geeky Gadgets, NESynth.

NESynth is a virtual synthesizer app for the iPhone that simulates 8 bit sounds from 80s video games, and the interface looks like an NES controller, check out the video of it in action below.

NESynth is currently only available in the US iPhone App store for $1.99, lets hope it comes to the UK one soon so I can test it out, there is a download link below.

Apple Says NO to Google Voice Apps

Google’s much anticipated Google voice app for the iPhone was sent to Apple for approval to be sold through Apples App Store. But Apple have refused to sell it and have also removed existing apps which provide similar services, reports claim.

Rumours suggest AT&T may be behind the move to ban the Google voice app becuase it also allows users to send free SMS messages and make cheap calls using Google’s own number.

A Google spokesperson told Techcrunch

We work hard to bring Google applications to a number of mobile platforms, including the iPhone. Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users for example, by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers.

Google have built some rats the Blackberry and I’m right and independent software companies also ported the service to the iPhone without including GV Mobile and VoiceCentral which had also been removed from the Apple App store

If you are a fan of the Resident Evil games you will be pleased to know that Resident Evil 4 is now available on the iPhone. The game takes place six years after the destruction of Raccoon City. Check out the video after the jump.

Unfortunately this iPhone version has been watered down with the amazing plot elements and cut scenes being replaced by brief text intros to each of the twelve levels and all of the voice overs are now gone.

This iPhone iteration of Resident Evil 4 is apparently built on the Resident Evil: Degeneration framework

Spotify one of the best things to happen to music in recent years has now been submitted to Apple for approval to be added to the Apple app store. Making it available to download in a few weeks. Spotify allows you to play tunes for free and allows you to create playlists with permanent URLs for linking and sharing with your friends. Check out the video after the jump.

The application has an off-line mode which allows users to temporarily cache their playlists to the iPhone for use when the connection is unavailable.

Pac-Man Remix has 3 different controllers that you can select to play the game, including a D-pad, the accelerometer and flick actions on the iPhone screen.

It also features 6 unique boss characters and 4 types of power-ups including one called ‘dash’ which adds a new strategic element to the game, there are also stage specific gadgets.

Pac-Man Remix will be available in a couple of weeks for the iPhone and the iPod Touch from the iPhone App store.

If you fancy radically changing the OS on your iPhone you can now consider loading Windows 95 onto it. However you will need the jail broken iPhone and a little technical know-how as this app isn’t available to download from Apple. Check out the video by the iSoft team after the break.

The hack uses a standard copy of Windows 95 and the Bochs emulator. As you may expect the performance is not great but they are looking to develop a hack for Windows XP which I’m sure will do wonders for the performance.

The first official ‘Doom’ game has landed on the iPhone, Doom Resurrection from Id Software.

Doom Resurrection is a new style Doom game which was created exclusively for the iPhone, and it uses art and concepts from the original Doom 3 PC game, check out the video of it in action below.

It looks very impressive from the video, the graphics are great and the gameplay looks really cool.

When I first heard about it’s release and subsequent price tag of $9.99 I did think that was a little high, but after seeing the above video I reckon it is worth it, as it looks pretty amazing for an iPhone game.

Sat Navs could be a thing of the past for iPhone owners, as TomTom has unveiled their turn by turn navigation App for the iPhone.

The new TomTom app will turn your iPhone into a fully fledged Sat Nav, with turn by turn directions, voice guided directions and 2D/3D maps.

This new application will work with the iPhone OS 3.0, and TomTom are releasing a car accessory that will let you use your iPhone in portrait or landscape mode.

The car accessory will also feature a built in charger, and a speaker and microphone so you can also use it as a hands free car kit.

TomTom are expected to launch the application and accessory at the end of the summer, there is no word on pricing as yet.

Artis Jorge Columbo used an iPhone app to draw the cover for the June 1st edition of the New Yorker.

Jorge used an iPhone App called Brushes, which lets you paint pictures with your fingers on the iPhone’s touchscreen, you can see a video below which shows the cover being painted from start to finish.

I have to admit this is one of the coolest things we have seen done so far with an iPhone, and the New Yorker obiously though so as well, by using this amazing iPhone art for one of their covers.
