Banned Xbox Owners File Class Action Lawsuit

Last week we told you that Microsoft has banned hundreds of thousands of Xbox 360 owners who were using modded consoles, from Xbox Live.

Well it looks like the banned Xbox users are going to take Microsoft to court over the banning in a class action lawsuit.

As has been reported widely in the media, tens of thousands of Xbox owners have had their modified Xbox consoles banned from Microsoft’s online gaming service Xbox Live.

Although modification of Xbox consoles is *arguably* against the terms of use for Xbox/Xbox Live, Microsoft “conveniently” timed the Xbox console ban to coincide with the release of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game and less than two months after the release of the very popular Halo 3: ODST game.

This “convenient” timing may have resulted in more Xbox Live subscription revenues for Microsoft than it would have generated had these Xbox console bans taken place at some time before the release of Halo 3: ODST and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

A law firm called Abington Law is filing a class action lawsuit against Microsoft on behalf of banned Xbox owners, and they allege that Microsoft has waited until Halo 3: ODST and Call of Dty Modern Warfare 2 were released, which are two massively popular games, before they banned Xbox 360 owners.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out, but I suspect Microsoft may win this one.

THQ Wireless has launched a new Star Wars themed game for the iPhone and iPod Touch, called ‘Trench Run’.

Star Wars Trench Run certainly looks like a fun game, and it features the famous scene from the original Star Wars movie, where you attempot to destroy the Death Star.

Mission: Use the Force to destroy the Death Star before it can fire upon the small Rebel base on Yavin’s jungle moon. As part of the Rebel Alliance’s Red Squadron, players dogfight with TIE fighters above the Death Star’s surface, dodging obstacles and laser-fire as they maneuver into position to target a small thermal exhaust port the size of a womp rat. If successful, a direct hit will cause a chain reaction that will destroy the Death Star, thus saving the Rebel base from impending doom.

Pac-Man Wedding Cake

We have seen quite a few different geeky cakes here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one if this cool Pac-Man Cake.

This geeky Pac-Man cake was made by The Domestic Scientist, as a grooms cake for a friends wedding, this is definitely one of the coolest video game themed cakes we have seen to date.

The topper was made out of super sculpey so they could keep it as a memento, but the rest was all edible. But I have to use “edible” in a loose term. I had to bake the cake 3 days before the wedding, and then decorate it at the church the day before, which I hoped wouldn’t be a problem, but the recipe I used couldn’t handle it.

Xbox Live Gold Free This Weekend In the US

Microsoft are obviously looking to increase subscribers to their Xbox Live Gold service, as they are giving it away free to Xbox Live Silver members, this weekend in the US.

To celebrate the launch of a host of new services this week, which include Twitter and Facebook, as well as their Zune service for the Xbox in the UK.

During the free LIVE Weekends, all Xbox LIVE Silver members can enjoy: online multiplayer, Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, Netflix, Sky Player, Halo Waypoint and 1 v 100*

From the 20th of November until the 23rd of November, Xbox users in the United States will be able to try out all the services available on Xbox Live Gold for free.

And European gamers will have the same service the following weekend, from the 25th of November until the 309th of November.

This is great news for Xbox 360 owners who want to try the service out before they buy to see if it is worth the monthly fee.

Modern Warfare 2 Banned In Russia

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, has been one of the most popular game release to date, selling a massive 4.7 copies in the US and the UK in its first 24 hours, it hasn’t been as popular in Russia where it has been banned because of ‘No Russian’ level which is also known as the airport massacre level.

Russian gaming fans have hit out against the scene where you have to infiltrate a Russian terrorists gang and take part in a massacre in Moscow Airport.

The game developers have removed the level from the PC game via a patch, but every copy of the console game has been recalled by the Russian government, and the game wont be re-released until the scene has been removed and the Russian government have approved the game.

The new console version of the game is expected to be released in Russia within the month.

Microsoft Zune Coming To The UK Today

Microsoft [MSFT] is launching its Zune service on the Xbox 360 in the UK today, and the new service will allows Xbox 360 users to stream movies in full HD 1080p direct to their HD TV.

Unfortunately we wont see any of the Zune players on sale in the UK just yet, as Microsoft has confirmed that they wont be launching the Zune HD in the UK this year.

Pick a movie and you can stream it into your living room instantly and in anything up to 1080p High Definition with 5.1 channel surround sound. In other words, with a good broadband connection, there are no pauses, no lengthy downloads and nothing else to stand between you and stunning HD entertainment.

The update will go live on the Xbox 360 some time today, and it will also include integration of social networking features which include Facebook and Twitter, although you will need a Gold Xbox Live subscription to access them.

This follows on from Microsoft’s recent launch of the Sky Player on the Xbox 360, which was so popular that Microsoft had to suspend the launch and roll it out gradually amongst Xbox 360 owners.

Micorosoft is obviously looking to turn the Xbox 360 into the ultimate entertainment console, for games and movies, and with Xbox 360 Project Natal launching next year it certainly is great news for Xbox owners.

Equipped with a 1.44 inch coulr screen the new generation Tamagotchi’s allow you to download content from the mobile web such as mini games and virtual items for your pets. Which you can then use to customise your pet.

These cute little pets are going on sale in Japan on November 23 and will be available in six colours costing around $57 each. Unfortunately Bandi has now release any information when they will be available in the UK or Europe as yet.

Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Sells 4.7 Million Copies In 24 Hours

One of the most anticipated games this year went on sale on Tuesday, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, the game makers Activision Blizzard yesterday released the sales figures for the first 24 hours since the game launched.

Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 sold a massive 4.7 million copies in the US and UK, in the first 24 hours, making it the fastest selling game, a record which was previously held by GTA IV which took a massive $310 million in its first 24 hours in May 2008.

There has been a lot of controversy over the launch of the game, mainly due to one level where the player kills civilians in an airport terror attack, and there have even been politicians speaking out against the game, which has obviosuly boosted sales and given it plenty of free publicity.

The long anticipated launch of the new Xbox system update in nearly upon us. Arriving on the 17th November according to Fast Company who say they have received a launch confirmation from LIVE general manager Marc Whitten. This update will add Facebook, Twitter, Last FM including and Zune video integration to your Xbox.

The Zune-branded service will offer instant-streaming HD video at 1080p with 5.1 surround sound. It also allows gamers to remotely watch movies with seven friends through Xbox Live using a virtual theater setting.

With regards Facebook users will be able to update their Facebook status with the games, movies they’re watching and check out other Facebook users’ activity.

Microsoft Bans Modded Xbox 360 Consoles From Xbox Live

Microsoft [MSFT] has banned Xbox 360 owners from Xbox Live who are using modified consoles.

The modified consoles can be used to play pirated games, and it looks like as many as 600,000 Xbox 360 owners have been banned from the Xbox Live service, out of its 20 million users.

Xbox 360 owners who were using a modified console no longer have access to Xbox Live, and they will not be able to play any online games with the modded console.

“All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live,”

“The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them,”

Although it seems that thier Xbox Live account still works and it is only the modded consoles that have been banned.

So it looks like a lot of Xbox Live players will have to purchase a new console from Microsoft if they want to continue using Xbox Live.

Speed Forge Extreme iPhone App

iPhone games developers RatSquare have released details of their latest game that is coming to the iPhone, Speed Forge Extreme, and from the video below, it looks amazing.

Speed Forge Extreme uses OpenlGL ES 2.0 support on the iPhone 3GS, which enable full screen motion blur effects in the game, check out the video of it in action below.

Although the game is obviously a copy of Sony’s Wipeout, it still looks pretty amazing, and the graphics look really good, this is one game I am looking forward to seeing on the iPhone.

There are no details as yet on when it will be available on the iPhone or how much its will cost, the developers are also planning a version of the game for Android handsets.

When Microsoft [MSFT] released its 4.3 firmware update to the Zune HD the other day, they mentioned that they had added support for 3D games, although none were available at the time.

Good news for all the Zune HD owners out there, Microsoft have now added a range of 3D games to the Zune HD Marketplace, and they are all free.

The new 3D games included in the Zune HD Marketplace are Lucky Lane Bowling, Vans Sk8: Pool Service, Piano, Audio Surf:Tilt, Checkers, and Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari edition.

All the games are free and available now from the Zune HD Marketplace.

Xbox 360 Project Natal Pricing And Release Details Leaked

We haven’t really heard much from Microsoft [MSFT] on their upcoming Xbox 360 Project Natal since it was announced back in June, now British trade site MCV has received details from a gaming industry source on Project Natal’s launch date and pricing.

The information has apparently come closed meeting between Microsoft and third party developers, and if the rumor holds up Microsoft will be manufacturing 5 million Project Natal’s, and they will go on sale worldwide in November 2010.

It was also revealed the Project Natal is likely to cost around £50 about $80, and it will come with around 14 games, if those pricing details are correct, Microsoft could end up selling a serious amount of their Project Natal, as myself and I am sure everyone else were expecting it to be priced a lot higher.

I guess we will just have to wait until next year, when we will hear more news from Microsoft on the exact pricing and launch date.

The Computer Choppers guys haven’t revealed any pricing as yet, but you just know it is going to be one expensive PS3 Slim.

Irish artist John Quigley has created some of the coolest geek art we have seen here at Geeky Gadgets, John used hundreds of Rubik’s cubes to create these pieces of geek art.

As you can see from the photos some of the geeky creations include Space Invaders, Sonic The Hedgehog, Pac-Ma,Mario and even President Obama which used 2,622 Rubik’s cubes. Pac-Man and Mario

The PS3 Coffee Table features two gigantic PS3 controllers for legs and a glass top, the giant controllers are made from ABS plastic and the decorated with PS3 buttons.

Sadly it looks like it is just a design concept and you wont be able to buy one, cool design though, an Xbox 360 version would be cool as well or what about a retro NES version.

A developer called Zodttd is working on an N64 emulator for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3Gs might just have enough power to run N64 games, and according to the developer it will only work on the iPhone 3GS and latest iPod Toich, which have the GPU and CPU and OpenGLES 2.0 support.

Some of the high end N64 titles might not run on the emulator, as the developer hasn’t decided how the controls are going to work for various games.

It certainly will be interesting to see how it turns out once it has been developed, it would be great to play N64 games on the iPhone.

We have seen quite a few cars here at Geeky Gadgets, some cool, and some that have been given a Geeky paint job like this fun Pac-Man car.

The Pac-Man car features a custom red and yellow paint job, as you can see from the photos there is a Pac-Man on the hood as well as the the doors and even on the mirrors.

Even the wheels have a custom Pac-Man paint job, and if you check out the inside you will see it features a custom Pac-Man interior, unfortunately there don’t seem to be any details of who owns this cool Pac-Man Car.

Nintendo has officially launched a new version of their popular hand held games console, the Nintendo DSI LL.

The Nintendo DSI LL features a larger 4.2 inch screen, at the request of customers who asked for a larger one than on the DSI, and the new screen is 93% larger than the DSI Lite.

The Nintendo DSI LL will go on sale in Japan in November for 20,000 YEN, about $220, it will come bundled with two touch pens, and three DSiWare titles pre-installed.

The games included will be two brain training games, and DS Easy Dictionary, and it will come in a choice of three colors which include, Natural White, Dark Brown and Wine Red.

There are no details as yet on when we will see the Nintendo DSI LL in the US and Europe.

This one of a kind Tetris inspired retro arm chair would definitely add a little colour to your office space. The quirky design was the idea of Mexican industrial designer Gabriel. Who constructed it from fibreglass, and b the look s of it made a very good job. It will also make it very strong. I originally though it had been made from material blocks.

Which personally would be a little more comfortable to site on. I would definitely like a couple of these but unfortunately there are no details on whether it will go into production very soon or not.

Assassin Creed Lineage Short Movie Part 1

The first of the three episodes has been released for the new Assassin’s Creed: Lineage short movies. Which has been created and d eveloped by Hybride Technologies, the visual effects studio behind 300 and Sin City which Ubisoft bought last year for just these sorts of projects.

These short movies will definitely help wet the appetites of fans eagerly awaiting the release of the video game video Assassin’s Creed II on November 17, 2009. Check out Assassin Creed Linage Short Movie Part 1 after the jump.

These short movies introduce some characters that you will meet in the video game. Like Lorenzo de Medici, the Italian statesman and de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic during the Italian Renaissance period.

If you have a few lego bricks lying around you could try building yourself a Mario or just put in a bid for this monster sized Lego Mario that is being auctioned on eBay currently at 2,650 Euros. The creator Dirk VH is donating the proceeds to charity. The Netherlands’ Game Mania commissioned Dirk to create this giant Mario.

The Huge Mario Lego sculpture weights 50kg and stands 5ft 9 inches tall the pieces are glued together for extra strength. Fantastic bit of engineering and well done to Dirk VH for creating such an amazing sculpture entirely out of Lego bricks and all for charity.

The Altec Lansing Stage-Gig features a 40 watt speaker and and a 6.5 inch subwoofer, it can be connected to any gaming console, and it also features RCA outputs so you can hook up some extra speakers to it.

It looks like it would be fun to use with your PS3 or Xbox, it will go on sale for $99.99 and will be available in November.

Black Nintendo Wii Launching In The UK 6th of November

We previously told you that Nintendo was releasing a black limited edition Nintendo Wii, the good news is that it will go on sale in the UK on the 6th of November just in time for Christmas.

The black Ninitendo Wii, will come with a matching Wiimote, Nunchuck and MotionPlus, and it will also come with a copy of Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.

It will be available in the rest of Europe from November the 20th, there are still no details on a US release date.

Nintendo still haven’t released any pricing details for the new Black Limited Edition Nintendo Wii.

Rock Bank iPhone App Now Available

We told you earlier this month that EA games would be releasing Rock Band for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, the good news is that Rock Band is now available from iTunes.

Rock Band for the iPhone and iPod Touch features a multi player mode that lets you play with up to four people over Bluetooth, it also has a built in feature that lets you invite your friends from Facebook to play the game.

The game comes with a range of songs from the Beastie Boys, Motorhead, Blondie and lots more, and you will also be able to purchase additional tracks as well.

Rock Band for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available now form the US iTunes store for $9.99, it looks like it isn’t available from the UK store as yet.

Xbox 360 Update Blocks Unauthorized Memory Units

If you are using an unofficial memory unit for your Xbox 360, you may want to switch to an officially licensed version as the latest update for the Xbox 360 from Microsoft will lock out any unofficial Xbox 360 memory units.

The information was posted on the Xbox Live Major Neleson blog, here is what he had to say about it.

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you are using a Xbox 360 with a built in hard drive then you can just copy your data over from your memory unit before the update goes live, if you don’t have a hard drive you will need to buy a new licensed Xbox 360 memory unit and copy the data over to there.

The Heckler and Koch MP5 Wiimote Controller was snapped by the guys from Pocket-Lint at a trade show in Hong Kong.

It features a built in rechargeable battery, that can be recharged via USB, and it even has a built in speaker and it will rumble when you get shot in supported games.

There are no details on when we may see the Heckler and Koch MP5 Wiimote Controller in the US and Europe or how much it will cost, it certainly would be a lot of fun to use with your Nintendo Wii.

Sony has announced the launch of a new 250GB PS3 Slim, the new 250GB PS3 Slim will go on sale in November just in time for Christmas, and it will retail for $349.99.

We pretty much knew this was coming as we have previously seen some PS3 Slim bundles coming with the new 250GB of storage.

The new model will be available as a stand alone unit, as well as in game bundles and it is $50 more than the current PS3 Slim which comes with a 120GB of storage.

The new 250GB PS3 Slim will give users more room to store downloaded movies and games, and Sony will also continue to sell the large original PS3 as well which comes with a choice of either 80GB or 160GB of storage.

Sony are obviously looking to cash in on the Christmas sale by adding the new 250GB PS3 Slim, to their range, and it will obviously be popular with gamers, it makes you wonder why Sony didn’t do this from the start with the PS3, as the new reduced price and new model has helped their sales.

Logitech has launched a new gaming keyboard which is the successor to the popular G11, the Logitech G110 Gaming Keyboard.

The Logitech G110 features customizable backlighting which lets you choose between red and blue LEDs, and the colors can even be mixed, it also features 12 programmable G-keys and three M-keys.

Other features include integrated headset support which will work with standard headphone or any headset with a 3.5m audio jack, there is also a USB 2.0 port.

There is no word on pricing as yet.

Sky Player Coming To Xbox Live 27th October

Sky has confirmed the launch date of its Sky Player on demand video player for Xbox Live in the UK as the 27th of October.

Xbox 360 users will be able to access on demand content as well a live content, as long as they have a Sky account or pay a subscription fee, although it hasn’t been revealed how much the service will cost.

Whether you’re subscribing to Sky for the first time, or looking to extend your existing Sky subscription into another room, your Xbox 360 will enable you not only to access live and on-demand TV, but also to chat and interact with your friends when they’re watching the same show as you in Avatar Party Mode, helping you to play, watch and connect. The full channel line-up and pricing will be confirmed at launch on the 27th.

Xbox 360 users will need to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold to use the Sky Player, it will be interesting to see if the service is competitive compared to other services from Sky.

We previously told you that Nintendo would be releasing a Black Nintendo Wii, there are still no details on its release date as yet, but today Nintendo has announced the launch of a new Black Wii-mote and Nunchuck, plus a black Wii Motion plus accessory.

All of these new accessories will be available from the 16th of November in the US, just in time for Christmas, I am sure the black Nintendo Wii wont be far behind.

The black Wii-mote will retail for $19.99, and the Nunchuck will also retail for $19.99, whilst the black Wii Motion plus accessory will retail for $49.99.

Sony PSP Go Gets A UK Price Cut

Just a week after the launch of the new Sony PSP GO, a number of online retailers in the UK have already dropped the price.

UK retailers Amazon, Play, HMV and Game have dropped the price of the PSP GO from £225 to £199, this is obviously an attempt by Sony to lure people away from popular handheld consoles like the Nintendo DS.

Sony are obviously looking to cash in on the Christmas sales, although I do wonder why the price wasn’t set at £199 from the start rather than reducing it just a week after it goes on sale, it is hardly fair to customers who paid the full retail price of £225 over the last week.
