We are at the end of another week here at Geeky Gadgets, this week certainly has been an interesting with lots of cool new gadgets released, plus a fair amount of technology news, so here is our roundup of the most popular posts this week.

My personal favourites were the Star Wars Tauntaun costume and the bomb proof wallpaper.

Solar Powered Robot Ball

Here is another fun project from the guys over at Instructables, the Solar Powered Robot Ball.

The Solar Powered Robot Ball uses a solar engine circuit, and a capacitor which stores the power, when enough power is stored in the capacitor, a burst of power is released to the motor which makes the robot ball move.

The Miniball itself was originally invented by Richard Weait of North York, Toronto.The Miniball is a amazing robot – it uses a simple circuit and the robot itself proves to be very capable, rarely getting stuck. The Miniball is mechanically complex and electronically simple. (But don’t worry – the mechanical part is still pretty easy)

In this case, we aren’t going to build the original Miniball, but a smaller, more basic wannabe version. This robot is extremely simple and can take a beginner less than 2 hours to build.

Livescribe Launches Pulse Smartpen App Store

Last month we told you about the new Pulse Smartpen from Livescribe, and also that they intended to launch an application store for their smartpens, today Livescribe has launched their application store.

The Livescribe Launches Pulse Smartpen App Store features just 30 paid and free applications at launch, which are designed to extend the functionality of the Pulse Smartpen.

“The initial set of more than 30 applications only begins to tap the potential of the Livescribe smartpen platform,” said Byron Connell, chief marketing officer of Livescribe. “We look forward to seeing our community of more than 5,500 registered developers create, develop and distribute the next generation of innovative paper-based computing applications to come.”

The built in battery will give you a range of 13 miles, and it takes about 4 hours to fully recharge the battery.

Xero’s 400w battery powered skateboard with an acceleration of 0 – 20 in 4 seconds having a contempory design in wood finish. Simply plug in to any mains socket and charge like a mobile phone. Can be Fully charged in 3 to 4 hours. Being fully electric, the eBoards are free from carbon emissions and CO2 gases.

The Xero eBoard Neo Motorized Skateboard is controlled by a remote control unit that is shaped like a gun, we have no idea why, but if you get one it might not be a good idea to skate past the cops with the control in your hand.

New Flip Video Cameras To Feature Built In WiFi

Cisco are releasing a new models in their Flip pocket camcorder range, and the new models will come with a range of new features, one of those is built in WiFi.

The new model will also feature a larger screen, that slides out tho reveal the record and menu buttons, and you will be able to upload videos direct from the new Flip video camera over WiFi.

Cisco have said that the new model will go on sale early next year, so no doubt we will end up seeing a preview of it at CES 2010 in January.

JVC (Maxell) has just released its latest iPod Dock the MXSP-D240 which features two 53mm driver units outputting 2 x 2.5w and is compatible with most iPod versions. JVC is looking to release this new model in Japan at the end of this month.

The Maxell MXSP – D240 iPod Dock is available in either white or black and it weighs in at around 1.2kg and measures 240 x 151 x 138 mm.

Available for around 10000 Yen which is around $112. No news on when this iPod dock will be available else where in the world.

NEC Develops Battery Free TV Remote Control

NEC Electronics and Japanese company Soundpower have developed a TV remote control that works without the need for batteries.

When a user presses a button on the remote, to change the channel or turn the volume up or down a small amount of electricity is generated through vibrations, the energy is then used to power the remote and complete the desired function.

According to NEC, the electricity that is generated by the vibrations is enough to turn the TV on and off, as well as change the channel of increase or decrease the volume.

The Battery Free TV Remote Control is just in the early prototype stages at the moment, but both companies intend to start marketing the technology to TV makers next year, so who knows we could see our new TVs in the next few years arriving with battery free remote controls.

The two iPhone cases were designed by Joe Van Etering who designed the ‘Clouds withing thunder’ iPhone case and Ross Zietz who designed the ‘Birds of a feather’ iPhone case.

We have seen quite a few different iPod docks here at geeky gadgets, some cool and some not so cool, and I think this is one that falls into the alter category, the Kitchen Scale iPod Dock.

The Kitchen Scale iPod Dock is being made by ADE-Germany, and currently it is on the prototype phase (lets hope it stays there), and it will be called the Rihanna kitchen scale.

Not one of the best integrated iPod docks we have seen, it will go on sale next year and it comes with a built in 2W speaker, there is no word on pricing or exact availability as yet.

Sony PS3 Firmware Update 3.10 Adds Facebook

Sony has announced their latest update to their PS3 firmware, version 3.10 which will bring a range of new features to the PlayStation 3, one of which is Facebook.

The Facebook feature on the PS3 will let you link your PlayStation network account to your Facebook account, and you can even set it up so that your PS3 will automatically update your Facebook news feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store Activity.

This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

Other features in the update include a revamped photo category on the XMB, plus a modified PSN friends list.

The petals can be folded away to make it more portable, and it can also be used as a dock to stand your iPhone in.

Very cool, i really like the design, I am sure some manufacturer is bound to pick this up as it would be a cool accessory for the iPhone.

Check out this fantastic replica Millenium Falcon holochess table Created by Philip Wise. Who has tried to create the most exact replica he possibly could. He has even built in the 50sec light and studio pattern from the first movie in the Holochess table which plays from an internal flash drive. Check out the video after the jump.

Scott Holden has created probably the coolest Star Wars costume we have ever seen on Geeky Gadgets, the Star Wars Tauntaun Costume.

The Star Wars Tauntaun Costume was designed in Solidworks, and then Scott used a variety of materials, which include, wood, expanded metal, and plaster of paris, and foam, check out the video of it in action below.

Toshiba’s Space Chair Project

Toshiba has created a cool advert for their new 2010 REGZA SV LCD TV range by sending a chair to the edge of space and filming it.

The chair was lifted to 98,268 feet, which took 83 minutes to get there, the chair was fitted with a helium balloon and a Toshiba IK-HR1S compact camera to film the action, check out the video below.

The chair used in the commercial was made from biodegradable balsa wood, and it took just 24 minutes to fall back to earth once the ballon popped.

We have no idea why Toshiba decided to send a living room chair to the edge of space, and how this ties in with their new TVs, very cool none the less.

The Clockman Japanese Alarm Clock measures 80 x 83 x 80mm and is made by Takara Tomy, it will tell you the time as well as speak one of the 300 programmed phrases randomly throughout the day.

It looks like the classic Etch A Sketch has had a makeover, and there is now a new version called the Etch A Sketch Freestyle.

Instead of the two separate dials used to draw a picture on the screen, it features a single ball in the middle which is designed to get rid of the pixelated lines from the original.

We have seen quite a few cool PC case mods here at geeky gadgets, the latest one is this cool ION Cube PC Case Mod, from Bill Owen from Mnpctech.

Walky- The iPhone Controlled Robot

How cool would it be to control your favourite robot toy with finger gestures on your iPhone? Yuta Sugiura and his colleagues at the Keio University have developed a new control system for robots called ‘Walky’ that lets you control various robots with your iPhone.

Walky can be used to make the robot walk, jump, turn and even kick a mini football, check out the video below which shows it in action.

The controls are shown working on a small bipedal humanoid robot, but could also be used to control game characters.

Very cool, it certainly looks like a fun way to control robot toys.

ICD Vega 15 Inch Touchscreen Google Android Tablet

ICD has announced the launch of a new Google [GOOG] Android based touchscreen tablet, the ICD Vega.

The ICD Vega will features a 15.6 inch touchscreen display, NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, 512MB of RAM and 512MB of storage, there is also a microSD card slot for storage expansion and a 1.3 megapixel web camera.

The ICD Vega will run Google Android 2.0 (Eclair), and other features include built in 802.11 b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and built in 3G.

Other features include a built in accelerometer, dual digital microphones, and ambient light sensor and a magnetic dock for charging and syncing the device.

ICD Vega will go on sale in 2010, there is no word on pricing or exact release date as yet.

Here is a fun calculator that features computer keys instead of regular keys, to give it a funky look, the 10 Key Calculator.

As well as being a regular calculator, the 10 Key Calculator can be plugged into your PC via USB which lets you use it with your PC for calculations.

Computer Keys translated to calculator keys. The 10 Key calculator is not only a regular calculator but is also USB enabled, allowing it to be used with a computer for entering calculations.

Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock

We have seen quite a few different homemade iPod and iPhone docks here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool retro iPod Dock by Peter Verrando, the Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock.

This cool iPod dock was made using a Philco Dynamic Tester from 1946, which is was small amplifier and speaker with an external probe that was used for fixing audio equipment.

The cabinet features a 10 watt solid state amplifier, together with a 5 1/4 inch Blaupunkt coaxial loudspeaker with a ceramic magnet, and it features a side panel with bass and treble controls as well as left and right RCA line inputs, plus two 1/4 inch jack inputs, and the iPod dock is plugged into the side panel.

Boxee Announces The Boxee Box

Boxee has confirmed that it will be launching the ‘Boxee Box’ to run its popular Boxee software direct to your HDTV.

They have said that the Boxee Box is being made with an undisclosed hardware partner, and mock ups of the box will be shown off on December the 7th along with details and specifications about the new device.

I am very happy to announce we have signed our first partnership with a CE company. At this point we can not say more about the partner or the specs of the device, but we can tell you we are working closely with them to make sure we deliver a great Boxee experience on it.

It will be interesting to see what hardware the Boxee Box uses, and what features it will have, according to Boxee it is designed to let users get Boxee content into their living rooms no matter where the content is stored.

Xbox Live System Update Arriving November 17th

The long anticipated launch of the new Xbox system update in nearly upon us. Arriving on the 17th November according to Fast Company who say they have received a launch confirmation from LIVE general manager Marc Whitten. This update will add Facebook, Twitter, Last FM including and Zune video integration to your Xbox.

The Zune-branded service will offer instant-streaming HD video at 1080p with 5.1 surround sound. It also allows gamers to remotely watch movies with seven friends through Xbox Live using a virtual theater setting.

With regards Facebook users will be able to update their Facebook status with the games, movies they’re watching and check out other Facebook users’ activity.

Check out this innovative Galaxy Dress designed by Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz. Using the smallest flatest full-colour LED’s available which are only 2mm x 2mm square. The control circuits are also extra thin and everything is hand embroidered on to a layer of silk.

Instead of using one large battery to power all the LEDs in the Galaxy Dress the designers have using loads of iPod batteries. Which give the glowing dress a 30min glow life before a recharge is needed. So make your entrance and exit fast. Areas without LEDs are finished with 4000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals.

If you are the same as me when travelling, carrying a bag of adapters and the corrects ones for the country your visiting has always been a pain for me. But this creative rotating power socket solution could put and end to adapters.

Personally i think this design is a winner and let hope they roll them out to hotels and motels around the world.

The Palm Pixi, is Palm’s second handset to run their new webOS it is a candy bar style phone with a built in keyboard on the front, and it has similar features to the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pixi features a 2.63 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 400, other features of the Palm Pixie include a 2 megapixel camera, as opposed to the 3 megapixel camera in the Pre, it features an accelerometer and GPS.

Here is another funky timepiece that would make a great accessory for any geeks wardrobe, the Pi Watch By Australian designer Ben McCarthy.

The Pi Watch features a stainless steel face, and rather than having hour markers, the face is blank, and the hour markers are shown by creases on the steel face.

It also features an injection moulded strap which is sandwiched between the watch case, and the watch crown to adjust the time is hidden in the back of the watch.

I love the design, if you want one, the Pi Watch is available from Workshopped for $430 AUD about $400 USD.

Worlds Smallest Train Set

I have seen some small models but this train set has to be the smallest I have ever seen.

About five times the width of a ballpoint pen tip this set comes complete with mountains, tunnel and trees. David Smith created this tiny train set completely from styrene as an N scale layout in Z scale. Checkout the video after the jump.

“After carefully inserting the train-shaped tubing into its oval slot, I bonded the layout to a styrene support block that was in turn bonded to a mounting plate attached to the motor. This was an iterative process that involved fitting and sanding and fitting and sanding until the support block was exactly the right height. The mounting plate was made relatively large to provide a convenient means of attaching the mechanism to the layout under the building.”
