Solar Powered Robot Ball

Here is another fun project from the guys over at Instructables, the Solar Powered Robot Ball.

The Solar Powered Robot Ball uses a solar engine circuit, and a capacitor which stores the power, when enough power is stored in the capacitor, a burst of power is released to the motor which makes the robot ball move.

The Miniball itself was originally invented by Richard Weait of North York, Toronto.The Miniball is a amazing robot – it uses a simple circuit and the robot itself proves to be very capable, rarely getting stuck. The Miniball is mechanically complex and electronically simple. (But don’t worry – the mechanical part is still pretty easy)

In this case, we aren’t going to build the original Miniball, but a smaller, more basic wannabe version. This robot is extremely simple and can take a beginner less than 2 hours to build.

Unfortunately as these speakers are only a concept at the moment you wont be able to buy them any time soon.

If you fancy taking a couple of fish eye photos with your new DSLR but find it hard to part with the cash to purchase a branded fish eye lens. then this creative DIY method of creating might be a good project for this weekend.

Using a fish-eye door viewer, a couple of pieces of scrap wood and duct tape you too. can create though perfect fish eye photographs.

The DIY fish eye lens above has been fitted to a standard Nikon 18-105mm VR lens.

If you’ve always fancied creating a Steampunk gadget or device but lack the skill or time to finish the job. Then this DIY Steampunk keyboard from Datamancer can definitely help you get started and if you cant even wait to make your own fully finished keyboards are available to purchase for $1200.

Each frame comes with 2 drilled sides, two feet in your choice of the “swoop” foot or the triangle (pictured above, left and right), top and bottom rods (aluminum has square rods and brass has round rods), connecting hardware, and a backing plate (brass frame has wood plate, not pictured but included. Aluminum frame has metal plate with black-painted bottom). The working area inside the metal measures about 7″ x 17″ so these frames are made to fit a small, modern keyboard (either mechanical-switch or membrane)

DIY Reflective Bike Tape

This crafty cyclist created this innovative mod for his bike to help him get seen at night. Rather then using the off the shelf reflectors (Which don’t do half as good a job as this mod) he popped down his local road maintenance centre and asked for any spare scraps of reflective tape used on road signs.

After a little modding and positioning the tape was in place.

The lady working at the front was very helpful and even went to the back right then and there. She emerged with a large box of white and yellow scraps that were mostly large rectangles, easily over 10sq ft in total! Just started to apply it to my bike

Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock

We have seen quite a few different homemade iPod and iPhone docks here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool retro iPod Dock by Peter Verrando, the Philco Dynamic Tester iPod Dock.

This cool iPod dock was made using a Philco Dynamic Tester from 1946, which is was small amplifier and speaker with an external probe that was used for fixing audio equipment.

The cabinet features a 10 watt solid state amplifier, together with a 5 1/4 inch Blaupunkt coaxial loudspeaker with a ceramic magnet, and it features a side panel with bass and treble controls as well as left and right RCA line inputs, plus two 1/4 inch jack inputs, and the iPod dock is plugged into the side panel.

DIY Arduino Word Clock

Some of our readers will remember the Qlocktwo clock, that display the time in words rather than numbers, now you can make your own DIY version using the power of Arduino.

The clock can be made with a bunch of materials which include some LEDs, a CNC plotter and a laser printer.

Last month I wanted to build a special gift for my beautiful wife, Megan. She has a teaching background in English, so what better present to make for her than a clock that uses language to tell the time for her desk at work.

The original project that I created used a Microchip PIC microcontroller (16F877), because that’s what I had in the garage. Since I published it (http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Word-Clock/), quite a few people, including my next door neighbor (Thanks Mikal) have asked me why I didn’t use an Arduino. Having never used one, my automatic reaction to Mikal was ‘Whats a one of those??” So, I did some research and found out what an Arduino was. Wow – they are so cool – so simple to develop for, and the barrier to entry is so low!. I ordered one from eBay, and re-designed the clock to use the Arduino Duemilanove as the controller.

Here is a fun DIY project if you have some spare cassette tapes lying around, the DIY Mixtape MP3 Player.

The DIY Mixtape MP3 Player was made by Justin Cole who decided he wanted to place an MP3 player inside and old cassette tape.

My new design uses a small mp3 player that I disassembled and placed inside a cassette tape adapter for an ipod.

This allows for mp3’s to be played back through a tapedeck. This has all of the ease and technology of an mp3 player with the retro coolness of a mix tape.

Check out this awesome hand and wrist mounted DIY flame thrower. Designed and created by Everett Bradford’s his “Prometheus Device” is fashion on the X-mens Pyro ability to create fire from thin air. Everett’s device doesn’t do it quiet from thin air but its fantastic never the less.

Using a deflection sensor in the device allows the user to control the flow of the butane and propane mix which create the flames. To ignite the gases the flame thrower uses an arc generator which send a spark across the users palm which ignites the gases.

Jason Marton over at hack weblog MetkuMods has created a unique PC inside a whisky bottle. Jason enjoys a little hacking and needed a small basic home server.

I already had a powerful computer setup so I wanted something more quiet, small and low power consumptioning to function as a basic home server. I love to tinker with hardware etc. so I wanted to make something quite unique for a case. I have seen many nice and creative cases before but none of them were made out of a bottle. In November I bought an industrial 3.5″ SBC board (with Socket370). For the project I selected a 1.5 litre Ballantine’s bottle for case. That was the proper size and shape for the task at hand.

648 Mega Pixel Milky Way Image

A Central Michigan University professor and Physicist Axel Mellinger has spent nearly two years traveling the world. Crossing South Africa, Texas and Michigan in a 26,000 miles world tour to obtain individual photos to compile this massive 648 Mega Pixel image of the Milky Way as seen from Earth using the 3,000 individual photographs he collected in his travels.

This panorama image shows stars 1000 times fainter than the human eye can see, as well as hundreds of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae,” Mellinger said. Its high resolution makes the panorama useful for both educational and scientific purposes, he says.

Another problem Mellinger had to deal with was the differing background light in each photograph.

“Due to artificial light pollution, natural air glow, as well as sunlight scattered by dust in our solar system, it is virtually impossible to take a wide-field astronomical photograph that has a perfectly uniform background,” Mellinger said.

Check out this original wedding cake that has been designed to show the scene in Stars Wars were Luke it put inside a Tauntaun to keep him warm during an Ice Storm. This must me one of the most original wedding cakes I’ve ever scene and the cake has fantastic detailing. Including some lovely Tauntaun guts and insides.. ummm lovely.

It was certainly one of the talks of the wedding evening. Older relatives were a bit confused, but the kids and our friends loved it!

These iPhone costumes are going to take some beating this Halloween. Created from LCD TV’s and using car batteries for power. Unfortuantely the screens are not touch sensitive and the actual iPhones are mounted on the top of the LCD screens which hetn display the content. The whole custome weighs in at around 85lbs and the car batteries that provide power are situated between their legs. Not that comfy but well worth it. Watch the video after the break to believe.

If you have a few lego bricks lying around you could try building yourself a Mario or just put in a bid for this monster sized Lego Mario that is being auctioned on eBay currently at 2,650 Euros. The creator Dirk VH is donating the proceeds to charity. The Netherlands’ Game Mania commissioned Dirk to create this giant Mario.

The Huge Mario Lego sculpture weights 50kg and stands 5ft 9 inches tall the pieces are glued together for extra strength. Fantastic bit of engineering and well done to Dirk VH for creating such an amazing sculpture entirely out of Lego bricks and all for charity.

Hack: PS/2 Keyboard Connection to iPhone

Bewared this is not a straight forward and a pretty involved method of connection and requires a few uber hacking skills to complete from the look of it. But if you fancy giving it a go, a guy at AwghBlog demonstrates how this PS/2 keyboard to an iPhone connection works and how to set it up in detail with step by step instructions.

To complete this hack you will need a jailbroken iPhone and since Apple’s official SDK doesn’t allow access to the serial port, an Arduino Diecimila, an iPod Breakout board, a female PS/2 keyboard connector, one 500k resistor, wire, and a soldering iron and solder… pheww.

The Arduino reads input from the keyboard and converts it to serial, then the iPhone pulls the data via VNC. Like we said, a little roundabout, but we love the amount of ingenuity involved.

DIY Speakers made from Hard Drives

Well this is a first I never thought you would be able to make speakers from computer hard drives but hey here they are. This pair of 20GB hard drives have been combined and enclosed in a acrylic case together with a VU meter to give it a lovely techie glow.

The hard drives are connected to a 10W stereo amplifier and use electro-magnetics to move the read write head. The polarity of the current determines which way the head moves. In an audio signal the peaks and troughs are opposite polarities, meaning the head vibrates with an audio signal. This, combined with vibrating against the platters of the hard drive, make the sound.

Some of our readers will remember our DIY Cardboard iPhone Dock from last year, French designer Julien Madérou has come up with a Paper iPhone Dock, and I have to admit it looks very impressive.

I really like the design on Julien’s Paper iPhone Dock, you can dock and charge your iPhone in portrait mode just like a standard iPhone dock, or you can use it in landscape mode to watch movies, very cool.

Single Tube Nixie Clock

After receiving an IN-8 tube from a friend, [Trax] wanted to find some way to show it off and decided create a piece art that doubles as a clock, it uses a low voltage plug in wall transformer and makes the high voltage needed to run the clock.

The IN-8 tube is lit from beneath using a green LED that pulses every second. A button on the back is pressed to show the time. Check out the video after the jump.

“With PIC microcontroller I used a “watch” crystal at 32,768kHz. It’s value is pretty cool and now we will see why. PIC16F84 has internal TMR0 counter that increments itself no matter what the PIC is doing at the moment. Think of it as a threaded sub-program. This counter can generate an interrupt when it’s value overflows from 255->0. We can also prescale this counter to slow it down a bit so we can make it generate an interrupt on every 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 overflows. So, when we finally connect our 32,768kHz crystal on PIC microcontroller, we should also know that the speed it runs at is divided by 4 and this characteristic is only found with PIC microcontrollers. This all means that our PIC runs at 8,192kHz which tells us that TMR0 will overflow 32 times per second. Now when we prescale it by 32 it means that it will overflow once per second and generate us an interrupt.”

Lego Star Wars Chess Set

Created by Lego fan Brandon Griffith this Lego Star Wars chess set has broken the chess paradigm of one figure per piece the kings include Luke and Leia together and the queen Han and Chewie.

Brandon decided to build three different Chess sets in total, one for each original episode. This is the first of the series. Star Wars: A New Hope Lego Chess which weights in at a whopping 25lbs.

My goals with the individual chess pieces is to:
1. Is durable enough to play the game with.
2. Present a piece that closely represents a scene form the movie. My favorites are “Obi-wan and the tractor beam” & “Greedo”

The chess board:
1. Built strong enough to carry with out breaking
2. The playing area easily removes from the rest of the board to reveal compartments to store the pieces.

DIY Nintendo Arcade Cabinet

This cool DIY Nintendo arcade cabinet was made from the guys over at Instructables, using an old PC, a 17 inch LCD monitor, some plexiglass and some MDF.

Inside is an old PC and a 17″ LCD monitor. The back of the cabinet has two USB ports and two NES controller ports. You can connect regular, un-modded NES controllers and play with those or use the joystick and buttons on the control panel.

The front end is a simple VB program that auto loads when the PC boots. You never need to connect a mouse or keyboard to load your games. The VB program gives a list of games installed. Using the joystick, you can select the game you want to play.

Here is a fun Radio to listen to your favourite rock music on, and it is actually made from a rock, well cement, the Rock Radio.

This fun radio is the creation of Guus Oosterbaan, it was made using cement, it started out as a brick shape but then Guus decided to take a hammer to it.

My ROCK Radio. The number two in my cement-audio-series. It started of being a very nice rectangular brick shape. Then I found out that a thick layer of cement shields the radio from actually receiving radio waves. With my “Now it doesn’t work anyway” philosophy, I took a big hammer and created this Flintstones look, and the radio works!

We have seen quite a few homemade iPhone Docks and stands here on geeky gadgets, like our own Pencil iPhone stand and Recycled CD iPhone Dock, the latest one is this fun Nuts and Bolts iPhone Dock, which was sent in by Geeky Gadgets reader Frederick P Weller.

I really like the design on this one, it looks really cool, although Frederick didn’t send us any instructions on how to make one, I think it would be pretty easy to make your own.

DIY Laser Cut Acrylic iPhone Dock

We have seen tons of different homemade iPhone docks and stands here on geeky gadgets, like our very own recycled CD iPhone stand, this new one which was created by Tod Kurt looks pretty cool, it was made from laser cut pieces of acrylic.

Tod used four pieces of 1/4 inch acrylic, and all screwed together, I think it looks really cool, maybe a larger version would look great as well.

It is made of four slices of 1/4″ acrylic (actual width 0.22″). The top two slices have an oval opening just snug enough to fit the iPod connector and keep it in place with friction. The third slice has a channel for the cable to escape out the back, and the bottom slice keeps the cable from falling out and provides some pushback when the iPhone is inserted.

Apparently it took them quite a few attempts to finally get a working version made, and it was made using some old vacuum tubes and a 512MB flash drive.

DIY: Recycled CD iPhone Dock

Some of our readers will have seen the fun homemade iPhone accessories that we have made before, like the Pencil iPhone Stand and the Cardboard iPhone Dock, the latest one is a Dock for your iPhone or iPod made from some recycled CDs, the Recycled CD iPhone Dock.

I wanted to make a dock for the iPhone from stuff I had lying around the house, but I also wanted to make sure that it would look cool sat on my desk whilst my iPhone was charging ans syncing, so I came up with the idea of using old CDs, you could also use DVDs as well.

I think it looks pretty good from the photos, and it is very easy to make, you can also use it for virtually any iPod and both the 2G and 3G iPhones, plus it will also work for the new iPhone 3GS.

To make your own you will need a Dremel, 11 to 12 CDs or DVDs, you will need 4/5 more disks than the height of your iPhone charging connector on the USB cable.

Mark out the width of the silver connector that goes into your iPhone on the center of one of the CDs.

Cut this out using a Dremel or similar so you can poke the silver connector through but not the whole connector end. Also make sure you can attach your iPhone and it starts charging.

The thickness of the disk should be OK but you may need to take off a little from disk to make a perfect fit depending on your charging connector cable.

Once you have done this mark the full width of the charging connector in the center of the next disk. Cut this out making sure the charging end will pass right thorough this disk but as a tight fit.

Repeat this process until you have enough disks stacked together so the bottom of the charging connector is flush with the last disk and the cable can lay flat across the disk.

Using another three or four disks depending on the thickness of your charging cable cut a channel going from the edge of the disk to the center a few millimeters wider than your cable.

Glue these together aligning the cut outs for the cable, then assemble the top part by gluing each disk and clamping firmly together to make them as tight as possible to the next.

Align all the cuts out and insert the charging connector into the stack of disks. Glue the cable channel disks to the bottom and the final untouched base disk or disks and clamp making sure there is no movement on the charging connector from the top or the iPhone will not start charging once you dock.

If there is movement remove one of the disks from the top stack and adjust accordingly.

The Recycled CD iPhone Dock is very easy to make, and I think it will look great on your desk

It is very cheap compared to the standard iPhone dock, which you now have to buy for $30, so you can save a few dollars with this DIY iPhone dock, plus you can also use it to charge and sync your iPod.

We have seen lots of cool DIY projects here at geeky gadgets, the latest one has to be one of the most inventive we have seen, the DIY Eggshell Speakers.

These fun DIY Eggshell Speakers were made by Flickr user Gomhi, i bet it took a serious amount of time to make these, I wonder if he broke a few eggshells attempting to make them.

Each of these fun DIY Eggsell Speakers houses a Hi-Vi B1s driver, according to Gomhi they sound a little narrow, personally I think these are one of the coolest homemade speakers we have seen.
