Some of our readers will remember the cool Ctrl, Alt, Delete cups that we featured on the site back in September 2008, when we featured these geeky cups there were just a design and there was no word on when we were likely to see them in the shops.

The good news is that you can now get your hands on a set of these geeky cups, as it seems there are a number of websites selling them, and the cups come as a set of three, with a tray to place them on.

If you want a set, the Ctrl Alt Delete cups are available in a choice of colors including black and white for $19.00 from Brando.

The Bed Alarm Clock

It looks like designer Florian Schafer has come up with a design for the ultimate alarm clock, this is definitely something that would make me get out of bed in the morning, the bed alarm clock.

The alarm clock isn’t actually in the bed, but on the sheets and it features a haptic touch sensitive alarm, with built in speakers and all the controls are embedded in the sheet.

The clock segments are thin and hidden underneath the fabric. They consist of silicone and give the emboss feel via a slat of EPS (electroactive polymer, used for artificial muscles). When activated by electricity, the slat expands and lifts up the silicon segment; giving us the embossed numbers of the clock.

Apparently you can even wash the sheet; the silicon segment and the EPS slat are fixed in a small case. The small cases are arranged on a platen. When you want to wash the sheet, you just remove the platen with the clock components.

It certainly seems like an interesting idea, and something that would get me out of bed in the morning, someone needs to start making these, as I would be able to get to work much earlier.

If you fancy taking a couple of fish eye photos with your new DSLR but find it hard to part with the cash to purchase a branded fish eye lens. then this creative DIY method of creating might be a good project for this weekend.

Using a fish-eye door viewer, a couple of pieces of scrap wood and duct tape you too. can create though perfect fish eye photographs.

The DIY fish eye lens above has been fitted to a standard Nikon 18-105mm VR lens.

We have seen quite a few different concept watch designs here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one if from designer Apostol Tnokovski, the Tick Tack Music Watch.

The Tick Tack Music Watch is designed for teenagers, and it features a built in MP3 player, and as you can see from the photos, the MP3 player controls are located under the dial.

It features a wide strap, and a funky blue watch face where the time is display on an analogue dial using a digital display, I think its a great design and certainly looks very stylish.

If you are the same as me when travelling, carrying a bag of adapters and the corrects ones for the country your visiting has always been a pain for me. But this creative rotating power socket solution could put and end to adapters.

Personally i think this design is a winner and let hope they roll them out to hotels and motels around the world.

Here is another funky timepiece that would make a great accessory for any geeks wardrobe, the Pi Watch By Australian designer Ben McCarthy.

The Pi Watch features a stainless steel face, and rather than having hour markers, the face is blank, and the hour markers are shown by creases on the steel face.

It also features an injection moulded strap which is sandwiched between the watch case, and the watch crown to adjust the time is hidden in the back of the watch.

I love the design, if you want one, the Pi Watch is available from Workshopped for $430 AUD about $400 USD.

Here is an interesting design from designer Kenny Hooper, the Air Guitar which is designed to use the product packing for the actual product, making it useful and not something which is thrown away when you open your package.

Kenny won the Silver Spark Awards 200, with his design for the ‘Air Guitar’, the guitar measures 25 inches long by 13 inches wide, and it is made from transparent sheets of Polyester PETG plastic.

The ‘Air Guitar’ features a 2 inch speaker and an electric pick, I think it is a great idea to use the packaging for the actual product, it would be great to see companies start to think about how they package their products, as the majority of packaging is only there to sell the product and just ends up as waste.

The latest design from the guys over at Mint Pass, is this fun looking robot which plays your favourite tunes and follows you around, the Music Tank Robot.

The Music Tank Robot is inspired by Caterpiller Inc’s endless track system, and as you can see from the photos it features a pair of tracks that it uses to move around.

It is operated by remote control via a WiFi enabled handheld device or a PC, it detects the location of your wireless router in your house and then maps out the house layout with its built in WiFi positioning system

It certainly look like a fun gadget, lets hope the guys over at Mint Pass put the Music Tank Robot into production as this would be cool to have in the Geeky Gadgets office.

Are you one of those people who always gets asked the time? Then you might need one of these Sharing Watches from designers Maezm.

As you can see from the photos, the watch display has been moved 90 degrees, which makes it easier for other people to read it when they ask for the time.

Normal wrist watch is worn so that the numbers are visible at the front when arm is folded toward the trunk of body.

However, if through a slight change of turning the display board 90 degree, the intrinsic meaning of the watch changes.

The information of time that I read is the same as those of others just as they are mine.

The subject of sharing is elevated from physical dimension to behavioral dimension.

It certainly looks like a fun watch, it looks like it is just a concept at the moment, so you will have to use your regular watch next time someone asks the time.

I am so glad the following Media Chair from Industrial Designer Martin Emila is just a concept, otherwise I would be saving up to get one, as it looks like one of the coolest gadget chairs we have seen.

The Chair features a built in iPod dock, which is integrated into the armrest and also some speakers in the headrest as well as a projector.

The Media Chair is made from a hard plastic shell, and it features four telescopic legs, and the chair has a soft foam insert to make it comfortable.

I love this design, it is definitely one of the coolest chair I have seen, and would make a perfect accessory for the Geeky Gadgets office.

We have featured a few different radio which unique way to control them. Like the Rolling Cube Radio but this innovative concept for blind people designed by South Korean-born Il-Gu Cha allows you to adjust the volume and tuning by rolling the radio backwards and forwards and left to right.

An analog radio is one of most important product for a blind people. In the using a behavior of how people manipulated rather than burying all of interaction in to the product. So adjusting radio to the right station would require a new kind of manipulation rather than simply tuning a knob.

‘R1’ has designed for them to control the radio more intuitively. By using a wheel structure user can control the radio by physical movement. The ‘R1’ allowed users to turn gadget on or off and to control volume and tuning simply by physically rolling the radio forward, backward and sideways.

Functionally, by using bevel gear system, I could increase a tuning range more than four times wider than before. There were too many channels in a narrow display before.

The Bike Wheel Clock

We have seen quite a few different clocks made from recycled parts here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool The Bike Wheel Clock.

This funky recycled clock was made from an aluminum wheel of a road bike, and it can be mounted directly on to your wall to give the illusion that it is floating off the wall.

The clock movement is a high torque German quartz movement and is attached to a set of rear cassette gears to conceal the movement. The movement is attached to the wheel by hanging it off of a screw coming out of the hub, and runs on 1 AA battery, included.

The Bike Wheel clock was available for $119 from Etsy, sadly it looks like this one has sold, I am sure if you want one the seller will probably have more for sale soon.

We’ve featured a few environmentally friendly cardboard PC cases here on Geeky Gadgets but this paper laptop defiantly could have a future with the price of components dropping and OLED screens in the near future. Who would have thought 10 years ago that we would now have disposable phones.

This innovative design by Je Sung Park is made from pulp and reprocessed materials.

Using paper as the case also allows for endless customization options, however there is still the electronics and screen to dispose of which can contain harmful chemicals. Which hasn’t really been covered in the designers explanation. Let hope maybe in the future even the electronics will be made from easily recycled materials.

We have seen quite a few different geeky watches here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is this cool timepiece from the guys over at Knot Design, the 0Hundred Watch.

This cool watch is the work of designer Nicholas DiLoreto and Kort Neumann and it is designed to look similar to a vintage military watch.

The 0Hundred Timepiece harmonizes modern uniqueness with the appeal of vintage military masculinity. This design is inspired by the strong relation of shape in tandem with function. The polycarbonate lens further embraces this idea by 3 dimensionally framing the inner components.

It is not clear if the watch is just a design at the moment, as we couldn’t find any details about where you can buy it from.

The 0Hunderd Watch

The Urban Cursor

The Urban Cursor was an art project that was shown off at the Festival Ingravid in Spain in September, it is basically a giant cursor that people could sit on, or move around, it had a built in GPS tracker which transmitted its location to Google Maps.

Despite being removed from its normal screen based environment, the cursor was still in touch with the digital world. Via an embedded GPS device, the cursor transmitted its geographic coordinates to a website. At the website, the coordinates were mapped in Google Maps thereby documenting the cursor’s movements in the physical world and making it possible for participants to see how they collectively helped move the object around.

During the festival participants could also upload photos of the cursor at the website. The photos were automatically placed on the map by matching the photos’ digital time stamp with the GPS coordinates.

It certainly looks like everyone had a lot of fun with the Urban Cursor, it would also make a great seating area for your Geeky Apartment.

Here is a cool design concept from designer Harc Lee, the Pocket Light, a simple yet brilliant idea.

The Pocket Light is about the size of a credit card, and it is designed to fit in your wallet, just pop out the light bulb from the centre and it lights up.

I think this is a great idea, and I am sure it wont be long before some manufacturer picks this idea up, it could be made with OLEDs and paper thin batteries.

If you are the person who ends up getting everyone coffee in the office, then you may want to check out these fun Link Mugs, which make it easier to carry multiple cups of coffee at once.

The Link Mugs were designed by designer Jonathan Aspinall, and you get a set of three mugs in a set, each one has a male and female plug so that they can be linked together.

Link Mugs are one of those simple but inspired product designs that solves the problem of how to carry several mugs at once without the need for a tray.

We’ve all done it at one time or another: tried to carry too many mugs in one go leading to spills, burnt fingers and stains on the carpet.

So, inspired by the quintessential builder’s mug, designer Jonathan Aspinall has developed an inspired solution to this problem – mugs that can link together. Each cup has a plus shaped plug on one side and a corresponding receptacle on the other. Thereby allowing the mugs to be linked together for you to carry in a line to friends, family and work colleagues.

Whiskey Bottle PC

Jason Marton over at hack weblog MetkuMods has created a unique PC inside a whisky bottle. Jason enjoys a little hacking and needed a small basic home server.

I already had a powerful computer setup so I wanted something more quiet, small and low power consumptioning to function as a basic home server. I love to tinker with hardware etc. so I wanted to make something quite unique for a case. I have seen many nice and creative cases before but none of them were made out of a bottle. In November I bought an industrial 3.5″ SBC board (with Socket370). For the project I selected a 1.5 litre Ballantine’s bottle for case. That was the proper size and shape for the task at hand.

648 Mega Pixel Milky Way Image

A Central Michigan University professor and Physicist Axel Mellinger has spent nearly two years traveling the world. Crossing South Africa, Texas and Michigan in a 26,000 miles world tour to obtain individual photos to compile this massive 648 Mega Pixel image of the Milky Way as seen from Earth using the 3,000 individual photographs he collected in his travels.

This panorama image shows stars 1000 times fainter than the human eye can see, as well as hundreds of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae,” Mellinger said. Its high resolution makes the panorama useful for both educational and scientific purposes, he says.

Another problem Mellinger had to deal with was the differing background light in each photograph.

“Due to artificial light pollution, natural air glow, as well as sunlight scattered by dust in our solar system, it is virtually impossible to take a wide-field astronomical photograph that has a perfectly uniform background,” Mellinger said.

We have seen quite a few different geeky clocks here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is from designer Matthias Pugin, the Switchital Clock.

The Switchital Clock uses a series of magnets that are hidden behind the watch face, the magnets moves the bars on the watch face to display the time in a digital format, check out the video of it in action below.

I love the design, I think this is a brilliant idea, and one of the coolest clocks we have seen so far, unfortunatley it looks like it is just in the design stage at the moment.

Radio’s are pretty much all the same these days, here is a design for a radio from the guys over at Cambridge Consultants that is innovative and a great idea, the Q2 Cube Radio.

Rather than changing the channel or increasing the volume via buttons, the Q2 Cube Radio lets you change the volume or select the channel by moving the device.

The Q2 Cube Radio has four preset stations, if you want to select one, you just move the cube onto one of its sides, to move the volume up or down you tilt the radio forwards or backwards.

The Q2 Cube Radio will be available in the UK some time before Christmas, there is no word on pricing as yet.

Ericsson’s Spider PC Concept

Ericsson has shown off an interesting PC design at the Taiwan Broadband Show, the Ericsson Spider PC Concept.

The Spider PC concept is Ericsson’s vision for portable computers of the future, it uses a pico projector to project a screen onto the wall, and a laser projector to project a keyboard onto your desk.

The first picture shows a working prototype, whilst the second picture is what they imagine the device will look like, personally I think the first picture would be a cooler design, as it looks more futuristic.

Ericsson imagine that the device will have all the features of a laptop, like WiFi, and a built in battery, it certainly looks like an interesting idea, check out the video of it in action below.

The Titanium ID Mouse is a wireless Bluetooth mouse, the casing is made from hand formed grade one titanium, and it comes with a neodymium scroll wheel and three buttons.

Diesel has just released a modern take of the day glow clothes of the 80’s. The new range of clothes including denim, tees, underwear and sneakers, is specially coated so that patterns and illustrations on the material will glow when under a black light. These patterns and illustrations are complete invisible in normal daylight.

The RotariPhone iPod Dock is designed to look like a retro rotary phone, it features a dock to place your iPod in, and the speakers are hidden in the phone handset.

The Target Clock

We have seen quite a few cool clocks here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is from German designer, Simon Lumb.

The Target clock uses two colored discs which are interlocked, the two discs turn to show the hand position on the clock, check out the video of it in action below.

Very cool, I love the design, it certainly is a lot more interesting than a standard wall clock.

I couldn’t find any details about whether it was for sale or not, you can find more details about it over at Simon Lumb’s website.

Automatic Speed Bumps

These new speed bumps designed and created by Mexico’s Decano Industries which react to the speed of your car.

If you are travelling too fast and hit the speed bump metal plates increase the size of the bump letting you know your going to fast. If you hit them at a slower speed both plates immediately collapse into the ground under the weight of the car and your ride is uninterrupted. Check out the video after the jump.

Decano says the system will cost $1,500 per speed bump to install and will decrease fuel consumption.

Speed bumps are especially popular in Mexico because few police officers are able or willing to enforce traffic laws, says José Luis Camba, a civil engineer and professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. There are at least 18,000 speed bumps in central Mexico City alone, according to the government.

We are starting to see a number of more greener and energy efficient gadgets and technology being released all the time, like the new electric cars from various manufacturers, but it is going to be some time before we see more energy efficient gadgets in every day life.

Designers Cheng-Tsung Feng, Yao-Chieh Lin & Bo-Jin Wang have come up with a really cool design for a solar powered traffic light.

If you think how many traffic lights there are in the world, this certainly seems like a good idea, although it is just a design concept at the moment.

The Solar Traffic Light uses Discolor LED technology, which means all three separate colors, red, amber and green of the traffic lights are houses in a single unit, which would make it a lot cheaper to produce as well.

The lights are powered by solar panels, which are on top of the traffic light, which also act as a hood to protect the light from the weather etc.

I think it is a great design, and I am sure we will see something like this on our streets in the future.

Cheetah Inspired Robot

Professor Sangbae Kim designer of the Stickybot and a Robotic designer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Is trying to understand how he can replicate natural animal mechanisms by creating a robot inspired by the cheetah.

The idea is to build a prototype robot from a construction of lightweight carbon-fiber-foam that will then be able to match the cheetah’s speed of 70 miles per hour.

Over the next 18 months, Kim and four other MIT graduate students are going to start constructing the prototypes. Starting with a computer model of the robotic cheetah to establish the optimal limb length, weight, gait and torque of the hip and knee joints.

It’s an ambitious project. Current wheeled robots are efficient, but can be slow in rough terrains. For instance, iRobot’s PackBot, which is used by the U.S. military, can only travel at speeds of up to 5.8 miles per hour.

This very funky portable Electrolux Fireplace concept starts off as a opaque ceramic and gradually turns translucent as it fire burns and heats the surface.

With a cool looking design this portable Electrolux Fireplace Concept is definitely one I would like to see go into production and beats anything currently on the market. Check out the video after the jump.

This is a new concept of a modern indoor/outdoor gas fireplace made of special kind of ceramic that has been discovered recently. When the fireplace is off the ceramic is of white colour and becomes transparent as the fireplace warms up, allowing the visibility of the fire inside. After the use, with the cooling process it becomes white again.

We have seen a few funky coffee tables before on Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is definitely one of the coolest we have seen so far, and it is bound to look great in any geek apartment, the Ripple Interactive LED Coffee Table.

The Ripple Interactive LED Coffee Table has 480 super bright LEDs built in under the glass, it also has optical sensors which make the LEDs light up when an object is place on the table of when you move your hand across the table.

The Ripple commands attention with its striking two tone edges and modern design. It engages all that come around it with it’s wonderfully smooth physique and softly twinkling lights. Choose the perfect size for your room, as the table comes in three lengths: 22″ inches long, 40″ inches long, or 58″ inches long. They are all 26″ inches wide by 18″ inches high.

I love the design, I think these coffee tables look amazing, although they are a little pricey, with prices starting at $1500 for the small tyable, $1800 for the medium table and $2,100 for the large table.

James May’s Lego house didn’t last that long, here is something more permanent made from Lego, a custom Lego Kitchen Island made form over 20,000 Lego bricks.

The Lego Kitchen Island was made by designers Phillippe Simon and Pillard Roessti, who customized their Ikea Kitchen island, by covering it in more that 20,000 Lego pieces.

Very cool, it certainly would be a fun place to have your morning coffee with all those Lego bricks, I bet it took the designers quite some time to put it together.

Student Builds Spherical Robot

A student at Colorado State University, Greg Schroll has built a spherical robot that can climb over obstacles and navigate the toughest terrains.

The Spherical Robot uses gyroscopes to drive and turn the robot by creating torque on the robot, check out the video of it in action after the jump.

“What I have is a concept prototype.” Schroll says. “My hope is that what I created can someday be deployed in a real situation, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

The project grew not from some quest to do good through robots, but from a quest to screw around. “Growing up, I was involved with projects that interest me, pretty much for fun,” Schroll says. “The spherical robot started as a thesis project at MIT, but I though it was cool, and once finished I realized this had some serious applications.”
