Multiple Kickstarter Projects Pass $1,000,000 In Funding

Only yesterday we were bringing you news that the new concept iPhone Elevation Dock, we had featured here on Geeky Gadgets was nearing the $1,000,000 milestone for pledges on Kickstarter.

Today not one but two projects have now passed that milestone, allowing concepts to make the jump to production and setting new records. As well as the iPhone Elevation Dock, the Double Fine Adventure video game project based in San Francisco, being developed by Double Fine and 2 Player Productions has also passed the 1 million pledge mark, with still 32 days left to go.

A company called ADzero has developed a Bamboo Android smartphone, and the device is expected to launch later this year, the handset was developed by the company and a UK student at Middlesex University, Keiron Scott Woodhouse.

The design started out as a concept, and it was then picked up by ADzero, who have developed it into an Android smartphone, and the device features a casing which is made from bamboo.

Scratch Markup Language (SML) is a new file format that has been created and developed by F.A.T with the sole purpose of being able to record and replaying turntablism. The new file format has been entered into this year’s Art Hack in Brooklyn.

London Bins Now Equipped With LCD Screens

The City of London has started rolling out and installing high tech bins that are equipped with LCD screens to keep pedestrians up to date on the news and travel services.

Called Renew Bins the project has been developed over the last couple of years and is now looking to makes in mark in the 2012 Olympics which will be hosted in London later this year. The Renew Bins are equipped with two LCD screens and can be enabled to also act as mobile hotspots.

Back in June last year we featured a new iBamboo speaker dock which was constructed from.. you guessed it Bamboo. Now Anatoliy Omelchenko of Triangle Tree the manufactures and designers of the original iBamboo speaker dock have unveiled a new line of speaker docks called the Urban which are created from recycled plastic.

The new iBamboo Urban speaker dock has been created after custom feedback, and requests for a products that was a little more robust that the original iBamboo. Triangle Tree is currently in the process of sourcing manufactures to produce their new iBamboo Urban speaker dock, which will be available in both clear and solid colour versions for around $29.

If you have seen the film Wanted starring Angelina Jolie you might remember the scene in which a bullet is able to be curved to a target by changing its course. Science fiction? Not any more, the US Military has now unveiled a new type of bullet that can do just that and can guide itself to a target, automatically changing its path as its flies.

Sandia National Laboratories has long been at work with the United States military developing the ultimate “smart bullet.” It announced today that a successful prototype of the bullet was created and tested at distances of over a mile (about 2,000 meters).

iWatch is an on going concept that ADR Studios first visualised back in 2010. Now ADR have updated their design to look a little slimmer and added a few more features, but unfortunately its still only a concept at the moment.

The iWatch concept would be equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and be fitted with 32GB of internal memory. As well as a FaceTime camera allowing you to chat with friends directly from your wrist.

Focus Designs Self Balancing Unicycle Version 2.0 Now Available (video)

Focus Designs have been developing their self-balancing unicycle for some time and are now ready to released a new Version 2.0 which is ready for market and is available to purchase for around $1500.

Focus Designs has used seven sensors, gyros and accelerometers to monitor the orientation of the unicycle. Which is then decoded via a processor, by a number of custom algorithms. This data is then feed down to the hub-mounted motor which then either speeds up or slows down to maintain axial forwards/backwards balance. Four years ago a project was started to create Pandora, an open source Linux based handheld gaming console, powered by an ARM processor. Now after a long development process and funding to the tune of around half a million Euros from dedicated fans of the Pandora console, its now available to pre-order.

The specifications of the Pandora console haven’t really changed much since the project started, so a handheld gaming device that was at the top of the curve regards specifications four years ago, is now looking a little more down to earth. The Pandora does still pack in some great features though that are not available on other handheld gaming consoles.

Researchers Unveil New Magnetic Soap Which Could Help Clear Oil Spills At Sea

Researchers at Bristol University in the UK have developed a new kind of composed of iron-rich salts dissolved in water, which responds to a magnetic field when placed in solution. Its hoped the new magnetic soap will be able to be used to help clear up oil spills from the sea, without polluting the surrounding waters.Soap is made of long molecules with ends that behave differently: One end of the molecule is attracted to water and the other is repelled by it.

Ubuntu has unveiled a new innovative user interface system called Head-Up-Display (HUD) today which it has been testing, and has designed to replace the traditional menu system used by nearly every computer software application to date.

The new user interface has been designed to provide a HUD that would search through all the possible commands to find the action you’re looking for. Watch the video after the break to see the new user interface in action.

G-5 Stratocaster Unveiled, Created By Roland-Fender Partnership (video)

Roland and Fender have today launched a new breed of guitar called the G-5 Stratocaster, which has been created from a partnership of the two companies. The new G-5 Stratocaster will be officially launching later this year in March, but Roland and Fender have today unveiled more details about their latest guitar.

The new G-5 Stratocaster guitar is the second to have been created in a partnership between between Roland and Fender, following on from the 2007 VG Strat guitar. The G-5 Stratocaster is equipped with a Composite Object Sound Modeling (COSM) engine, the same technology fitted in the GR-55 Guitar Synthesiser. We have featured a number of different gadget chargers here at Geeky Gadgets, the latest one is just a concept put it seems like a cool idea, and basically it is designed yo charge you gadgets whilst traveling.

The Rolling Suitcase concept from designer Jung Inyoung is designed to charge you various gadgets using Kinetic energy, when the you your suitcase along the ground, the wheels of the device along with some gears will generate and store kinetic energy.

The Eye3 has been designed by Kellie Sigler to provide a professional quality yet affordable flying robotic camera platform. Sigler has been building, programming and flying camera drones for many years and has created a low-cost kit, that practically anyone will be able to assemble she says. iDesk Concept, Provides A Glimpse Of A Future Workspace

The iDesk concept which has been designed and rendered by Adam Benton and takes a look at what desks may hold for the future. The iDesk concept is an entirely adaptable workspace that doesn’t just contain your computer and documents. But enhances their functionality by allowing them all to interact with each other, in a similar vein to Microsoft’s Surface technology.

By placing objects on to the iDesk surface, devices, images and data can easily be transferred from your smartphone, tablet or camera directly to your desktop computer and vice versa. The desktop would become an additional working space to your monitor screen, and enable you to arrange and view documents as if they were paper placed on a traditional work surface.

There are plenty of iPad stands available to purchase, but the new Magnus stand takes a new innovative approach to keeping your iPad 2 attached to the stand and in an upright position, using the internal magnets of the iPad 2. Which were originally added by Apple for use with their Smart Cover.

The foot section of the new minimalist Magnus iPad 2 stand provides just enough metal for the magnets to make contact, and keep the tablet securely enough in place whilst in landscape mode to be used.

Ball Beats Sequencer Adds A Physical Element To Music Creation, Rather Than A Touchscreen (video)

OverThe last few weeks we featured a number of state-of-the-art sequences, mixers and amplifiers here on Geeky Gadgets in the run-up to the NAMM show. Many of which included a dock for Apple’s iPad tablet, enabling you to do an array of different things with your musical instruments and audio.

Looking to bring a more physical edge to sequencing rather than using the touchscreen. A new sequencer called “Ball Beats” has been created that uses steel ball bearings to create and compose beats. The Ball Beats sequencer has been designed to be used with either Mac Linux or PC computers and provides a more original way to create beats. Awesome Fully Automated Lego Brick Sorting Plant (video)

Any Lego master builders out there that have a large amount of Lego bricks they need to sort. Might be interested in this fantastic Lego sorting plant which has been created to demonstrate a factories manufacturing execution system.

The Lego builders over at BrickIt work commissioned by the Dynaway company to build the miniature sorting plant. Which has been constructed using around 37,500 Lego bricks together with 28 motors, 22 sensors including touch, colour and ultrasonic, together with 7 Lego Mindstorm NXT controller bricks. Google Sky Map Goes Open Source (video)

Over the weekend Google has announced that their Google Sky Map which was launched for Android smartphones back in 2009 and was created by a number of Googlers from the Pittsburgh office during their 20% development time. Will now be moving into the community of open source in a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University who will further development Sky Map in a series of student projects.

Google’s Sky Map’s development will now be driven by the Carnegie Mellon University students, with Google engineers remaining closely involved as advisors. In addition Google has also open-sourced the app so that other astronomy enthusiasts can take the code and augment it as they wish.

Petzl Nao Self Adjusting LED Head Torch (video)

Petzl the maker of head torches and other camping accessories has unveiled a new product addition to their range, in the form of the Petzl Nao head torch. Which has been designed to adjust its beam depending on where you are looking.

Whether you are looking straight ahead or looking down to read a map the Petzl Nao head torch can recognise the intensity and type of light you might require to shine from its LEDs, and will adjust it’s beam accordingly. Watch the video after the jump to see the new Petzl Nao in action.

Optical Turntables (video)

The Product design studio based in Berlin has created a very unique sound system using optical sensors rather than the tradition needle. The optical turntables were created for the premiere of Volkswagen’s new Beetle at the 2011 IAA motor show.

Rather than using vinyl disks like a traditional record player the new optical turntables uses discs with concentric geometric patterns printed on them and then placed below a glass surface to produce music. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

Minimalist Flaca LED Lamp Is Created From Single Steel Sheet

Many products available use a lot of resources to be created, but one LED lamp is fighting back on wasteful usage, and has been created using just a single thin sheet of steel. The minimalist design of the Flaca LED lamp has used the thin steel sheet to create a number of hinged panels which allows the lamp to extend up from the desktop.

The environmentally friendly design of the LED lamp has only used materials it needs and nothing more, with very little wastage from the sheet. The Flaca LED lamp has been designed by Mexican designers Masiosare Studio, in the lamp apt name “Flaca” means skinny in Spanish.

Are you looking for a more original speaker system? If you are and have a little spare time this weekend you, might like to create your very own Toolbox BoomBox, which has been designed and built by Floyd Davis IV.

Floyd explained that he has equipped his Toolbox Boombox with a Pyle Pro stereo amplifier, together with speakers bought second hand from a thrift shop. The speakers are mounted onto a plywood sheet which has then been mounted in to the toolbox with the amplifier. Check out the video after the jump to see the making of the Toolbox Boombox.

BASF And Philips Develop Solar Powered OLED Sun Roof

BASF and Philips have developed a new prototype solar powered sunroof designed for cars, the technology has been developed using OLED panels which have been combines with transparent solar cells.

The idea is that the sunroof will let in light during the days and also charges the solar cells at the same time, and at night time the panels turn into a light and are powered by the electricity which was stored earlier.

Facebook Bed

The Facebook bed otherwise known as the Fbed, has been designed by Tomislav Zvonarić, and allows those addicted to staying up to date with their Facebook updates a place to grab a little shut eye in between typing.

As you can see from the images below the Facebook Bed has been designed using the Facebook “f” logo turned on its side. At one end there is a space for your computers connected directly to your Facebook pages and a sleeping area at the other. Although you will need to stay cross-legged or a little cramped when using the computer, as leg space is at a premium.
