Cool Concepts – The Aura Speaker adds some style to your HiFi

Who says speakers have to be square and boring? designer Paul Scarfe doesn’t think so, with his stunning Aura Speaker Concept.

Aura Speaker

A discrete, yet stylish conceptual speaker that aims to fill a room with sound using resonating glass. The glass cone shape amplifies and projects the sound into the room, whilst a bass speaker below handles the low end of the audio.

Aura Speaker

This is a stunning concept, and a great combination of different materials to produce an amazing looking speaker, I would love to see these speakers go into production.

Cool Concepts – The Sand And Time Watch

Check out this cool concept watch from Balykin Design, the Sand and Time Watch.

Cool Concept - The Sand And Time Watch

It works like a standard watch and tells the time in the hour glass shaped segments, then when it goes into screen saver mode, the digital sand drops from the top chamber to the bottom, just like an egg timer.

Cool Concept - The Sand And Time Watch

I have no idea if this concept will ever be built, but if you cant wait till one comes out you could just strap an egg timer to your wrist.

Clever Concepts – The Float Away Notebook – keeps your Notebook cool

Everyone knows the amount of heat a notebook pumps out, and sometimes they get to hot, well designer Young Hwan Kim has the solution, the Float Away Notebook.

Float Away Notebook

The back end of the notebook is elevated which allows the heat to dissipate into the air, keeping your notebook nice and cool.

Float Away Notebook

This idea is so simple yet brilliant, I am really surprised some notebook manufacturers haven’t thought of this before, then again they wouldn’t be able to sell us aftermarket notebook coolers and stands as there would be no need for them.

Green Concepts – The OSP Robot

Check out this cool concept from designer Ji-hoon Kim, the OSP Robot.

Green Concepts - The OSP Robot

The OSP Robot is designed to deal with oil spills at sea and we all know how devastating they can be to the environment.

Green Concepts - The OSP Robot

The idea is that the robots are deployed quickly and they connect together and form and inflatable barrier around the oil spill, stopping it from spreading further.

Green Concepts - The OSP Robot

The OSP robots can be deployed by a helicopter or a boat and work together to encase the oil spill so that it can be removed by a clean up crew quickly without it doing further damage to the sea and the surrounding coastline.

Green Concepts - The OSP Robot

This is a great concept and I am sure it won’t be too long before we see something along these lines being used.

Cool Concepts – The Edge Phone

Check out this cool concept mobile phone from designer Chris Owens.

Cool Concepts - The Edge Phone

The Edge phone is designed for the style conscious fashionistas. The name has nothing to do with data speed. In fact we don’t even know what this phone is capable of because as with all fashion phones, looks rein supreme and the Edge phone makes sure you notice with its glowing glass keyboard.

Cool Concepts - The Edge Phone

To answer an incoming call, slide the glass keyboard out. An embedded LED illuminates the etched numerics via refraction creating a glowing effect.

Cool Concepts - The Edge Phone

The only visible lines is the microphone wiring which designer Chris Owens has cleverly disguised as a keyboard border.

Fun Concepts - The Vak Vak - Water Pistol Slippers

Fun Concepts - The Vak Vak - Water Pistol Slippers

When you put the words kids, bath, and entertainment together, the image of a rubber ducky might come up. That’s the inspiration behind the Vak-Vak. With a squish of your heel, water sucks into the duck. Another squish water jettisons in a steam of fun wetness.

Cool Concepts – The Kinetic Cellphone

Check out this cool concept cellphone from designer Ricardo Baiao

Cool Concepts - The Kinetic Cellphone

The Atlas Kinetic Cell Phone concept focuses on greener technologies without sacrificing design. It’s all made of aluminum and glass. The central sapphire glass reveals the generating and charging unit. Power comes from kinetic energy similar to that found in watches that use oscillating weight to power a mainspring.

Cool Concepts - The Kinetic Cellphone

The phone only contains basic features. None of that fancy multi-media stuff. If power runs out because it was sitting still for too long, just give it a few upside down turns to get the kinetic rotors going again. Now you’ll never have to worry about batteries.

Cool Concepts - The Kinetic Cellphone

Whilst I am not sure if I like the look of this cellphone, the way the device is powered is a great idea, and I would love to see this being integrated into mobile phones in the future, we definitely need manufacturers to start think of more ways gadgets can be powered.

Cool Concepts – The Hands Free Tie

Check out this cool concept from designer Wooteik Lim.

Cool Concept - The Hands Free Tie

Cool Concept - The Hands Free Tie

Tired of hearing people say, “do you have me on speakerphone?” or how about “why is it echoing?” Avid hands-free headset users know the drill and no matter how sensitive the mic is, truth is the ear is just a tad too far away from the mouth. The Tie Up concept is a solve to that problem by placing the mic right below your mouth. Slide it up the lanyard to answer and conversely slide down to hang up.

Cool Concepts – The D:Scribe SMS and Email Pen

Check out this cool concept pen from designer Reuben Png.

Cool Concepts - The D:Scribe SMS and Email Pen

The D:Scribe is a digital fountain pen that allows users to send SMS and email messages from paper. Just write out the message and circle the person’s name to send. This does away with a keypad and allows you to focus on communicating in a more personal way from anywhere as long as you have a bluetooth enabled phone and a surface to write on. The pen also records everything you write which can be accessed on a computer. Of course for the creative peeps, if writing doesn’t suit your fancy, the D:Scribe also works with genius and not so genius drawings of brilliance.

Cool Concepts - The D:Scribe SMS and Email Pen

Once a message is sent, the status is displayed on the built-in OLED screen. The designers have also expanded its capabilities beyond that of messaging. Should your home electronics and appliances be bluetooth enabled, you could potentially program the pen to input commands by writing in the air. A little abstract but lets pretend this idea is more a patent for possibilities.

Cool Concept Phone by Fred de Garilhe

Update: 22nd Februay 2008.

I have been contacted by the designer of this concept phone, Fred de Garilhe and have been asked to remove it from the site as he has received a commnication from the brand that he has included in his design asking him to remove all reference to it.

Personally I think this is a little heavy handed by the company in question, the concept design from Fred de Garilhe, I hope to feature more of his work on the site in future.

Check out this cool concept mobile phone from designer Fred de Garilhe.

This Concept fashionable mobile phone concept works by integrating an optical fiber system that display image between two glass parts. There are 12 micro lighter fibers, that throw image components to the glass, that offer a quite good luminosity, and keep the mobile phone concept as light as possible. All lights only appear when you open the phone, by pushing removable part on the side of it.

Cool Concepts – The MCube wireless charger and speaker for mobiles

Check out this cool concept from designers Sohui Won, Seung-Hoon Kwak & Yeong-Kyu Yoo, the MCube.

Cool Concepts - The MCube wireless charger and speaker for mobiles

When you come home just place your mobile near the MCube. Using short range induction technology, your phone gets juiced up while all basic information like date/time, messages, and caller ID are transfered to the MCube’s built-in display. What’s more, the touch controls on the MCube enable you to access your mobile’s music files and pumps it out through built-in speakers via bluetooth. Who wants one?

Although just a concept, I am sure is won’t be long until we similar devices, imagine if all your gadgets worked without wires.
